MAY 15, 2003 Smoke Signals 9 Monte "Mouse" George July 21, 1951 April 28, 2003 Tribal member Monte George passed away on April 28. He was 51. Monte was born July 21, 1951 in Dallas, Oregon to Hubert Mercier and Alberta Riggs. He is survived by his father, Hubert Mercier; sons, Solomon and Sam George; daughter, Mario George; brothers, Allen, Ronnie and Tony George, Dennis and Lennis Mercier; sisters, Diana George, Candy Robertson, Crystal Thomas, Rebecca Mercier; and granddaughters, Tamera and Jorden George. A memorial service was held May 5 at the Tribe's gymnasium. Janice "Jinx" Norwest-Knight March 21, 1946 April 27, 2003 Tribal Elder Janice Norwest-Knight passed away on April 27 in Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. She was 57. She was born March 21, 1946 in Dallas, Oregon. She married Paul Knight in Boise, Idaho. She worked as a seamstress and header. She had lived in Bend, The Dalles and Kah-Nee-Tah. She moved to Sheridan in 2001 and to Willamina in 2002. She loved flowers and gardening and was a skilled quilter. Her family said her nieces and nephews called her "Auntie Mom." Survivors include her husband of Boise; a son, Gary Jackson of Chiloquin, three sisters, Marilee Norwest-Davis of Grand Ronde, Marcella Selwyn of Sheridan and Vernita Norwest-Harris of Yelm, Washington; three brothers, Marce Norwest of Grand Ronde, Oscar Norwest of Salem and Gregory Norwest of Klamath Falls; 10 grand children and four great-grandchildren. A funeral was held May 2 in the Tribal cemetery. Community Potlatch Giveaway This is a part of a fire ceremony that fed and honored our Ancestors that passed on. We want to share this. Grand Ronde, Oregon 97347 I Polk County Public Works Department, Yamhill County Public Works department and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, in coopera tion with the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Af fairs and the Oregon Department of Transportation invite all residents of the Community of Grand Ronde to attend a Community Meeting to review conceptual plans for the Grand Ronde Road Widening project. Public comment is encouraged. Taylor Lumber Site: Health Study Findings To Be Presented On May 20 Health officials at the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) will discuss their assessment of health risks associated with the spilling of wood treatment chemicals at Taylor Lumber and Treating, Inc., located at the western edge of Sheridan, in a public meeting this month. The meeting is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, at Sheridan City Hall, 120 S.W. Mill Street in Sheridan. Based on environmental sampling at the former lumber site, DHS has determined there is no apparent public health hazard. Because there may be community questions, attendees will be provided one-on-one discussion opportunity with public health officials. DHS conducted the public health assessment in collaboration with the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Diseases Registry (ATSDR). The entire report is available on the Web at www.healthoregon.orgsuperfund or at the McMinnville Public Library, the Sheridan Public Library or the Grand Ronde Tribal Community Clinic. Chickenpox Vaccine Can Prevent Chickenpox! Chickenpox (also called varicella) is a virus that can be spread from person to person through the air or by contact with chickenpox blisters. Chickenpox causes a rash, itching and fever. It can also lead to skin infection, scars, or more seriously pneumonia, brain damage or death. In the United States approxi mately 12,000 people are hospitalized and 100 people die each year as a result of chickenpox. Who should get the vaccine? One dose between the ages of 12 and 18 months or at any age after that if they have never had chickenpox. Children who do not receive the vaccine before the 13 years of age will need two doses, 4-8 weeks apart. Who should wait to get the vaccine? People who are moderately to severely ill should wait until they recover. Pregnant women should wait until after they have given birth. Women should not attempt to conceive for one month after getting the chickenpox vaccine. People who should check with their medical provider before receiving the chickenpox vaccine are: People with HIVAIDS or any other disease that affects the immune sys tem. People being treated with steroids for two weeks or longer. People who have cancer or receiving any kind of treatment for cancer. People who have recently had a blood transfusion or received other blood products. Who should not or do not need to get the vaccine? People who have had the chickenpox virus do not need to get the chickenpox vaccine or people who have had a life threatening allergic reaction to: Gelatin Neomycin(an antibiotic) A previous dose of chickenpox vaccine Please call your health care provider to make vaccination arrangements!
