Tribal recycling saves tons of waste Over the last year and a half, Tribal offices have made great strides in reducing the amount of paper waste thrown away. Employees recycle computer and copy paper, direct mailings, envelopes, and other common office waste. Thanks to the hard work of our Maintenance staff, office paper is currently collected at Public Works and recycled at a rate of 1 cubic yard each month, in addition, cardboard is collected and picked up for recycling at a rate of 2 cubic yards each month. Employees at Spirit Mountain are also working hard to do their part to reduce the amount of waste leaving the casino. As of August 1996, 33 of the casino's waste is being re cycled. Cardboard, office paper, and aluminum cans are just a few of the items collected and recycled through the efforts of casino employees. This practice results in a savings of approximately $12,130 a year in Tribal disposal costs and helps eliminate approximately 455 tons of garbage per year from local landfills. These recycling efforts save money and conserve precious landfill and energy resources. Natural Resources' Environmental Protection department and the Tribal Recycling Com mittee are working to promote and expand these and other recycling programs. Recycling is a vital environmental commitment and can be fun and easy for individuals as well. Here are a few ways that everyone can help cut down on garbage: Return empty aluminum cans to your local grocery store: Not only is the $.05 deposit worth the trip, but recycled aluminum cans use only 5 of the energy needed to produce new cans. Recycle used car oil: Motor oil can contaminate water supplies if it is disposed of improperly. Used oil can be re-filtered and re-used. Just one gallon of used oil can be recycled into the same amount of motor oil that it takes 42 gallons of virgin oil to' make. Create a compost pile: Lawn clippings and some left-over food can be made into compost to help improve garden soils. Set up recycling at home: Newspapers, tin cans, glass bottles, and plastic milk jugs are easy to recycle at home. Set up separate containers for each type of material. Plastic trash bins, large storage containers, or even brown paper bags will work as recy cling containers. Rinse any bottles and remove paper labels from glass or tin cans. Make two-sided copies whenever possible:' This simple practice could cut copier waste in half. Reuse scrap paper: At home or work, keep a scrap paper box next to your computer printer and use the other side of these for scratch paper or rough drafts.
