February 18, 1997 SMOKE SIGNALS EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT I V), I David Riggs: Behind the scenes in the buffet By Tracy Dugan David Riggs was hired at Spirit Moun tain Casino last April and has been work ing as a Food and Beverage Buspcrson in the buffet ever since. After that, things started falling into place for him, and the new path he had chosen for himself. "I am currently renting a nice house in Grand Ronde, which became available shortly after I was hired," he said. Consid ering how scarce housing is in the area, David feels that relocating from Salem to Grand Ronde was meant to be. The son of Louis and Doris Riggs, David was raised in the Salem area, and held dif ferent jobs for many years until the early eighties, when his mother became ill, and he moved in with her to provide her with the care that she needed, which became a full-time job. David also has an interest in music and collecting, which has also helped earn him some part-time work in the Salem area. He is considered to be an experienced appraiser of records by many of the used music store owners in Salem. "I spend a lot of time in record stores, and eventually got to know the owners pretty well," he said. "From time to time, they would call me to help them appraise rare albums they've received or answer questions." Because of his interest in album collect ing, David says most of the time he ap praises albums at pretty close to their ac tual value. "What makes a record valuable is how rare it is, and the quality of the vinyl," he said. "Many times, people don't realize what they have." David said that a friend of his bought an old Billie Holliday record at a moving sale for $1 that had been un opened and in perfect condition. The record was worth about $50. Of course, now that he's employed at the Casino and living in Grand Ronde, David doesn't spend as many hours collecting and appraising as he used to, but he goes in to Salem at least once a week. He said he doesn't mind, because he is really enjoying his job and working in a place where so many of the people are family friends or relatives. "I am very proud of the fact that I am blood relatives with many of the people who started the Casino," he said. "And I feel that Grand Ronde is really a place where I belong." As far as his job goes, David works the day shift at the buffet, but said that the job of busperson is really multi-faceted. "The people in the restaurant really build a rapport with the customer. We provide information to people and answer questions about the Casino," he said. "This is a high demand industry, and when the buffet is busy we all have the skills it takes to work together interactively."
