Bureau of Indian Affairs Housing Improvement Program
Native American Press Conference Report!
The First Annual Native American Press Conference was held in Warm Springs, March 13
16, 1985. The conference was attended by close to 100 representatives from the U.S.
and Canada.
Workshops were held consisting of layoutdesign, writingediting, business operations
and advertising.
Those attending the conference were encouraged to submit copies of their paper for
competition. There were close to 100 entries. Awards were given during the banquet
on Friday, March 15. The awards were given for Creative Advertising, News or Photo
Series, Hard News Story, Feature Writing, Layout Design, Editorial Writing, Column
Writing, General Photo, and Overall General Excellence.
Siletz received an award for Overall General Excellence. Honorable mention also
went to Siletz and Spilyay Tymoo (Warm Springs) in Oregon.
