The regular meetings o f Post 48 are the th ird T uesday o f each m o n th at 6 p.m. at the W arm S prings VEW- Ameriçan Légion Hall. The Commander o f the new P o s t is C harlie Tailfeathers, “The Ameri can Legion is about help ing the com m unity,” he said. T he American Legion helps individuals who have served the, county. T he organization helps their families, and the commu-« nity overall. “This is not about any individual,” T ailfeathers said. “This is about mak ing a better community by working together.” Help ing im prove the lives o f the youth is another focus o f the group. So far, about 30 people have become active m em bers o f the American Le gion Post 48. The meetings see an average attendance o f about 20 individuals. A few m onths before, Veterans Ser vice Officer Keith Baker m et w ith tribal Secretary-T rea surer Jody Calica. “H e had three projects,” Baker, was saying earlier this week. The first was to re-es tablish the VFW Post 4217. This goal was accomplished BSBggg; last year. Second was the form ation o f an American Legion Post, which is new on the reserva tion. The third goal is to es tablish a Warriors, Society on the reservation. Baker explained that mem bership requirements for the American Legion are differ ent from those o f the Veter7 ans o f Foreign Wars. VFW members served during a recognized conflict in hos tile territory, land or sea. This is a Relatively' small num ber o f individuals, he said. T he A m erican Legion m em bers served during conflict in any other part o f the world than the hos tile territory. T his would include a m uch larger per centage o f veterans, Baker said. The Sons o f the Ameri can Legioti is open to fam ily members o f those who served. The American Le gion also has an Auxiliary, like the VFW Auxiliary. , T he Am erican Legion and the VFW both came about to represent and ad vocate for veterans.
