The American Legion
Post serving the reserva

Post No. 48. The regular
meetings o f Post 48 are the
th ird T uesday o f each

W arm S prings VEW-
Ameriçan Légion Hall.
The Commander o f the
new P o s t is C harlie
Tailfeathers, “The Ameri
can Legion is about help
ing the com m unity,” he
said.
T he American Legion
helps individuals who have
served the, county. T he
organization helps their
families, and the commu-«
nity overall.
“This is not about any
individual,” T ailfeathers
said. “This is about mak
ing a better community by
working together.” Help
ing im prove the lives o f
the youth is another focus
o f the group.
So far, about 30 people
have become active m em
bers o f the American Le
gion Post 48. The meetings
see an average attendance
o f about 20 individuals.

group began forming in D e
cember o f last year. A few
m onths before, Veterans Ser
vice Officer Keith Baker m et
w ith tribal Secretary-T rea
surer Jody Calica.
“H e had three projects,”
Baker, was saying earlier this
week. The first was to re-es
tablish the VFW Post 4217.
This goal was accomplished
BSBggg;
last year.
Second was the form ation
o f an American Legion Post,
which is new on the reserva
tion. The third goal is to es
tablish a Warriors, Society on
the reservation.
Baker explained that mem
bership requirements for the
American Legion are differ
ent from those o f the Veter7
ans o f Foreign Wars. VFW
members served during a
recognized conflict in hos
tile territory, land or sea.
This is a Relatively' small
num ber o f individuals, he
said.
T he A m erican Legion
m em bers served during
conflict in any other part
o f the world than the hos
tile territory. T his would
include a m uch larger per
centage o f veterans, Baker
said.
The Sons o f the Ameri
can Legioti is open to fam
ily members o f those who
served. The American Le
gion also has an Auxiliary,
like the VFW Auxiliary. ,
T he Am erican Legion
and the VFW both came
about to represent and ad
vocate for veterans. Any
