(AP) — Navajo N ation Presi dent Ben Shelly signed o ff on a bill that boosts the tribe’s sales tax by 1 percent. The increase from 4 per cent to 5 percent begins in January and is expected to generate as much as $8 mil lion a year. T hat money will be split betw een the tribe’s scholarship office and an eco nom ic d ev elo p m en t fund. The Tribal Council approved had approved the tax mea sure last m onth. (AP) - T h e fed eral B u reau o f Indian Affairs said it has handled more than a hun dred reports o f suspected child abuse or neglect on the Spirit Lake reservation since taking over social services in October. T he bureau assum ed control o f the tribe’s so cial service program s af ter criticism that the tribe has failed to protect vul nerable children. The bureau has new pro cedures for placing children in foster homes, including en suring there are docum ents showing the placencient was ordered by a tribal judge. The bureau also informed the N o rth D akota congres sional delegation last week th a t it h as h ire d a social worker to manage the Spirit Lake Tribe’s social services program. “I t’s im p o rtan t th a t the BIA continue to be engaged, and that they keep the public inform ed about efforts to en sure child safety on the res ervation,” delegation m em bers said in a statement. Last week, some members o f the Spirit Lake Tribe com plained that visible progress was not being made.
