Composite was one o f three small companies (revenue under $10 million) in O regon to be named as an award finalist. T here w ere 1,100 potential voters in this election. N o minimum voter turnout was required, as ap plies to tribal referendums. The Wasco Chieftainship position has been vacant since June 13,2010, w h e n atw ai C h ie f N e ls o n W allu latu m p a ss e d . C h ie f Wallulatum had been chief since 1959, w hen he was elected Chief. Leading up to the vote this week, the question o f succession to the Chieftainship remained unresolved, following a series o f meetings o f the Wasco people. W ith direction from Tribal Council members, and other interested'W asco people, the question was p ut to a vote. Tribal Vital Statistics helped with the vote, as did the Election C om mittee. There were six candidates on the ballot: G arlan d B ru n o e, G e o rg e C le m e n ts Sr., G ra n t Clements, John Katchia Sr., Alfred Smith Jr. and D erek Tasympt. Warm Springs Com posite P rod ucts gave a positive report to Tribal Council earlier this week. The year so far has been good, thanks in large p art to the overseas m arket that Composite Products has developed. T here have been no layoffs in 2012 am ong the approximately 40 employees at Composite, said Duane Darnell, chief executive officer. H e re p o rte d th a t C o m p o site Products is now producing its own fire-proof door cores, along with the protective fire-proof Tectonite. Pro duction o f door cores is m ajor step toward Composite Products becom ing a self-contained business, rather th a n co n tra c tin g fo r th e cores, Darnell said. T he con test begins at 12:03 p.m. and ends at 12:56 p.m., in the community center social hall. A light lunch is being served. S ee H A L L O W E E N on 9 Com m unity forum coming up on school The tribes will host a com m u nity forum on Thursday, Nov. 8 to g ath er in p u t o n the W arm Springs k-8 school. The forum is set for 6-8 p.m. at the Agency Longhouse. T ribal m an agem ent is also seeking com m unity m em bers w ho are interested in serving on the school design guidance team. The team will include between eight and 18 m em bers, said U r bana Ross, tribal chief operations officer. The design guidance team will m eet once a week from early N ovem ber through January, as plans are developed. There are- some priorities that are guiding the design process o f the new school, Ross said. For instance, a goal is to give students as m uch learning and instruction time as possible. Safety and se curity for students is another pri ority. Here are other guiding ideas as the plans are developed: Spend the m oney as wisely as possible; complete the project on tim e an d o n budget; create a school that is efficient and con ducive to learning; maximize the local econom ic im pact o f the THANKSGIVING THRILLS GIVEAWAY! The core team includes the secretary-treasurer, chief operations officer, school board and Tribal Council m em bers, and the project manager.
