Telecom Award for Excellence Many individuals, organi zations and governm ent en tities have cooperated in the developm ent o f the W arm Springs Telecom. T his cooperative e ffo rt was recognized at the Oregon C o n n e c tio n s C o n feren ce, held at H ood River, Oct. 18- 19. A t the conference the W arm Springs Telecom re ceived the Excellence in Tele c o m m u n icatio n s P a rtn e r ships Award. Mary Beth Henry, o f the O regon Connections Awards C om m ittee, nom inated the W arm Springs Telecom for the award. “W arm Springs Telecom was created to provide trib- ally-owned ‘im proved access, reliability and affordability’ fo r th ese trib a l n a tio n s,” H enry w rote in her award recommendation. “T he -tribes w ere previ ously neglected and under served by incum bent tele com m unications providers for many years, leaving more than one-third o f the popu lation without basic telephone serv ice a n d v ery lim ited broadband or even basic dial up Internet access.” The Oregon Connections Telecommunications Confer ence draws attendees from all regions o f the state to share ideas, experiences and knowl edge about telecomm unica tions. The recent award was an exciting Impact Aid Hearing A public m eeting in W arm S prings o f th e Jefferson County School D istrict 509-J B oard o f Directors is scheduled in November. This meeting will be a chance to discuss the Im pact Aid application for financial year 2014, and other matters relating to Im pact Aid. T h e m eeting will be held at 7 p.m. on M on day, Nov. 26 in the library W arm Springs E lem en tary School. T he district annually affords its patrons, spe cifically Native American parents and guardians, the opportunity to offer com m ents and make recom mendations relative to the application for and the use o f Im pact Aid funds. The enterprise was made p o ss ib le tw o y ears ago through $5.6 million in fund ing from the Ainerican Re covery and Reinvestment Act. The W arm S p rin g s Telecom opened its offices in th e o ld ap p a re l b u ild in g , which was completely rem od eled and equipped w ith state- of-the-art telecommunication equipment. The Telecom now serves close to 300 customers on the reservation, some w ho pre viously had no telephone ser vice, much less Internet.
