She was 30. F a ro n w as b o rn o n June 24, 1982 in Madras to parents Annie Meanus and Gilbert Kalama Sr. Faron had three cred its to go to finish her edu cational goal. She looked forward to helping her dad fix their home, and she en joyed talking with friends and family. She joined h er sister T atum at the Com m unity C e n te r an d th ey e n v i sioned their goals. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gil b e rt K alam a Jr. an d Rupert Kalama, and sister “Joy Joy” Kalama. News fro m Indian C o u n try Authorities probing deaths of 4 on Navajo Nation KAYENTA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the deaths o f four people in the northwestern part o f thè Navajo N ation that were re ported in a 12- to 16-hour span. FBI Supervisory Special Agent MacDonald Rominger said that autopsies are sched uled this week for the two men and two women. Rom inger says one m an died last Thursday night at a hom e in Kayenta. (AP) - Police arrested a man ac cused o f disorderly con duct at the 107th annual Columbus Day wreath-lay ing ceremony in Pueblo. The m an was arrested after the ceremony while protesters were waiting be hind a barricade to get to the Christopher Columbus sta tu e d o w n to w n . T he n ew sp ap er re p o rts the man was seen rattling the barricade fence. Police Chief Luis Velez says the man was taken to Tupelo to honor Chickasaw chief Piomingo T U P E L O , Miss. (AP) - The city o f Tupelo plans an nual days o f rem em brance for Chickasaw N ation chief Piomingo. The N ortheast Mississippi D ailyjournal reports that the first ceremony was held M on day at Piom ingo’s statue at Fairpark. B rad L ieb, cu ltu ral r e sources sp ecialist fo r th e Chickasaw N ation’s D epart m ent o f H om eland Affairs, said the statue and the annual commemoration will strength en the bond between the tribe and the people o f Tupelo. T h e C hickasaw N a tio n also celebrates Piomingo Day the second Monday o f O c tober, which coincides with tfi 7 Piomingo served under Gen. T h e C hickasaw In d ian s liv ed in s e m i-p e rm a n e n t settlements in areas that now include Kentucky, Tennessee, M ississip p i and A labam a. They first encountered white m en, probably m em bers o f explorer H ernando D eSoto’s gold-seeking mission, in the mid-16th century. Their stand against white invaders failed in the 1830s an d they, a lo n g w ith th e Choctaws, Creeks, Cherokees and Seminóles, were forced to move west on the Trail o f Tears. P io m in g o w as b o rn around 1750 in what was then know n as Chokkilissa O ld Town northwest o f w hat be came Tupelo. Although no recorded his to ry o f the w arrio r exists, Lieb said, some details o f his life are known. H e was reared in a m od est family by a C hickasaw fa th e r an d a C hak ch iu m a m other and had sought his status as a war leader during a time o f great turmoil, Lieb said. Many nations in the late 1700s fought over the land occupied by the Chickasaw. As a teenager, Piom ingo spent about 10 years among Cherokees o f Tennessee and earned the name “Mountain L eader,” Lieb said. H e re- turned to the Tupelo area at the end o f the war with the French. H e w as o n e o f th re e Chickasaws to sign the 1786 Treaty o f H opewell, which defined the tribe's boundaries and placed its people under the protection o f the United States. P iom ingo served u n d er G en. G eo rg e W ashington and, in 1792, he earned the Washington Peace Medal. He died in 1798, Lieb said. the police station where he was to be issued a citation. His name wasn’t immedi ately released. T he Chieftain reports a b o u t 175 p e o p le a t tended the ceremony, and about 150 protesters were on hand.
