said. Many nations in the late
1700s fought over the land
occupied by the Chickasaw.
As a teenager, Piom ingo
spent about 10 years among
Cherokees o f Tennessee and
earned the name “Mountain
L eader,” Lieb said. H e re-
turned to the Tupelo area at
the end o f the war with the
French.

Treaty o f H opewell, which
defined the tribe's boundaries
and placed its people under
the protection o f the United
