Francis has seen similar struggles with water and the irrigation set-up. O ver the past five years the garden has had a water break. Francis says, “The garden is finishing ano th er season providing much produce for com m unity m em b ers, and has provided corn four out o f six seasons for the Back to School Barbecue.” Although the garden faces challenges— like n o t having the appropriate equipm ent and keeping up with the weed p ulling before the weeds re seed—ît continues to thrive. Recendy Francis, team ed up with OSU Extension for a class at the garden, and par ticipants were able to harvest corn, beans, tomatoes, celery and variety o f other vegetable from the garden. This year Carol Sahme o f the Community Wellness Cen ter and youth w ho partici pated in the Summer Recre ation Program planted and maintained a pumpkin patch at the garden. “We w ould w alk to th e p u m p k in p a tc h to I p u ll w eeds,” says Sahme. “T h e kids chose a pum pkin and carved their names in it while it was little, and they havé watched it grow.” T he garden was created based o n th e principles o f com m unity ow nership and sharing and has continued to reap benefits.
