Tribe plans $26M casino in Michigan
M A C K IN A W

Mich. (AP) - A tribe is plan

in Michigan’s northern Lower
Peninsula.
T he L ittle Traverse Bay

agreed to shift $970,000 to
its capital project fund for pre
construction fees and con

in Mackinaw City. A draft o f

included the 6-2 vote.

south o f Petoskey. A n agree

seco n d casin o in E m m e t
County. Mackinaw City was
originally considered for a
casino before the Petoskey-
area one was built.
T he tribe says the new ca

Garden
to community members.
Francis has seen similar
struggles with water and the
irrigation set-up. O ver the
past five years the garden has
had a water break.
Francis says, “The garden
is finishing ano th er season
providing much produce for
com m unity m em b ers, and
has provided corn four out
o f six seasons for the Back
to School Barbecue.”
Although the garden faces
challenges— like n o t having
the appropriate equipm ent
and keeping up with the weed
p ulling before the weeds re
seed—ît continues to thrive.
Recendy Francis, team ed
up with OSU Extension for a
class at the garden, and par
ticipants were able to harvest
corn, beans, tomatoes, celery
and variety o f other vegetable
from the garden.
This year Carol Sahme o f
the Community Wellness Cen
ter and youth w ho partici
pated in the Summer Recre
ation Program planted and
maintained a pumpkin patch
at the garden.
“We w ould w alk to th e
p u m p k in p a tc h to I p u ll
w eeds,” says Sahme. “T h e
kids chose a pum pkin and
carved their names in it while
it was little, and they havé
watched it grow.”
T he garden was created
based o n th e principles o f
com m unity ow nership and
sharing and has continued to
reap benefits. I f you would
like m o re in fo rm a tio n o r

Francis at 541-553-2460.

Some growers have come
and gone, but the work still
gets done. In m ore recent
years E dm und Francis, Com
munity Wellness Coordinator,
has helped to organize the gar
den by coordinating with lo
cal and outside resources to
prep the garden (disc, tilling,
planting), holding meetings at
the Community Garden, and
setting-up and assigning plots
