Blessed K ateri was b o rn in 1656 and dièd at the age o f 24 in 1680. The process o f her sainthood began in 1884, followed by her veneration in 1943 and two cer tified miracles in 1943 and 2006. T he construction w ork on the H ollyw ood intersection is being done between the hours o f 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m ., M onday thro u g h Thursday. The scheduled hours are best for the site conditions and safety, said T h e sectio n o f ro ad from Shitike Creek Bridge to the four way intersection will be removed and reconstructed with new road base and asphalt. Friday, Sept. 28 will be Native American Day at Ski Bowl, where they will open the facilities to tribal m em ber students. T here will be no charge for students w ho show lan guage learning, perfect attendance, athletic involvement or outstanding GPAs. T he following day will be the grand opening o f the Warm Springs Interpretive • Center at Mt. H ood. This begins at 10 a.m. T he day will include a powwow, tribal m em ber vendors, social dance performances. Events are free and open to tribal members., Leading up to the grand open ing, m em bers are planning a com m em orative horse ride from the n orth reservation boundary to Mt. Hood. T h e c e le b ra tio n re c o g n iz e s W arm Springs and their tie to the land. T he area is part o f the land the tribes ceded to the United States as p art o f the Treaty o f 1855. Vendors can sign up to reserve a spot for $25 per table. Vendors will have until Sept. 24 to sign up, and can pay at the door. Intersection work to continue for next few weeks There are flaggers to direct traf fic during work hours. The project is expected to be fin ished around the end o f October. T he Hollywood-Tenino paving project has a budget o f close to $600,000, w ith funding, th ro u g h tribal shares o f the B lA infrastruc ture budget. The project will involve recon- struction and paving at and around the Hollywood-Tenino intersection. T he project summary states: will receive a 2-inch asphalt over lay. T he 2-inch overlay will also be applied from K o t-num road to the Hollywood-Tenino inter section. Sidewalks and concrete curbs will be rep aired o r re placed in various sections o f th e project. participants. (See page 4 f o r more in formation.) Rodeo at Simnasho Halliday returns as W. S. Agency Superintendent By Dave McMechan Spilyay Tymoo J o h n Halliday returned to w ork in W arm Springs last week. Some may rem em ber that he. worked here years ago, at jobs quite different from his new one. Halliday is now thè Superintedent for the BLA W arm Springs Agency. His first day back o n the job in W arm Springs was last Thursday. A bout 30 tribal m em bers were on hand for a welcoming party at the administration building. H e then m et w ith T ribal C oun cil for-the first time last Friday. A m atter fo r early discussion was possible further 638 contracting by the tribes. ' Earlier years Halliday grew up on the Yakama R eservation and in Seattle. Back then he w ould spend time on the W arm Springs Reservation, visiting relatives. His grandfather Frenchy T h o mas, a log truck driver, lived at the trailer co u rts by th e D esch u tes River near Rainbow. His grandfa ther was known as a great singer. H e was know n especially For ‘‘In dian Lové Call,” which he sang at the Pendleton Round-Up. “Thèy say I look just like him,” Halliday said. His uncle is Luclie Thom as, now am ong the oldest Eving Wasco el ders. His brother is James HaUiday o f W arm Springs, also known for his singing, w ho is now studying at the O regon State University cam pus in Bend. F rom the early 1980s until 1992, HaUiday worked at different jobs on came a W arm Springs PoEce of ficer. H e was a tribal officer from 1986 until 1992. His final two years as an officer were spent in inter-tribal law enforcem ent at the Columbia River. Education John Halliday the W arm Springs Reservation. H e first worked as a busboy and waited tables at Kah-Nee-Ta. H e then w orked as an insulation instaUer for H ousing, and then be Halliday th en attended the University o f Montana, where he received a Bachelor o f Arts de gree, after having eariier studied at HaskeU Indian University in Kansas. H e received his degree from the University o f M ontana in 1994. H e then earned a Mas ters in PubEc A dministration in 1996. H e also ta u g h t classes through a feUowship. A t the uni versity he taught poEtical theory, pubEc poEcy, Native American econom ic and en v ironm ental perspectives, and tribal govern ment. T he Simnasho com m unity will host the “W hy K not” R odeo this Saturday, Sept. 22. O pen bullriding and a sanctioned WEd H orse race are part o f the action. T here wiU be an endurance race starting at noon, and the rodeo starts at 1 p.m. T here will be a junior colt race, senior colt race, cow riding, bare- back riding, ranch b ro n c riding, S&G WEd H orse race (for non-card holders only), ribbon roping, and cow milking. Sign-up between 10 and 12 on rodeo day. P ay o u ts are $100 a d d e d fo r most; $50 for junior colt and senior colt races; and $300 for ranch bronc riding.
