n r Spilydy Tyrnoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Pdge 7 February 9, 2011 W.S. team plays at OSU halftime By Lori Edmo-Suppah For the Spilyay Tymoo CORVALLIS — Young Na tive girls from the Warm Springs and Chiloquin communities had the opportunity to witness the skill of women’s college basket ball at the Oregon State versus Stanford game January 29. The Warm Springs Sacred Thunder girl’s basketball team faced off against the Sprague River Ducks at halftime of the college game when they played over seven straight minutes of hoops. The teams batded back and forth but in the end Sprague River prevailed with a 2-0 score. Sacred Thunder coach was Shawn Harry while Duke Kimball coached the Sprague River team. They waited a little longer for Stanford players to come out of the locker room and did get an autograph from Jocelyn Tinkle who is from Montana. The opportunity evolved af ter the Honoring Native Ameri can Heritage Oregon State men’s game last November when Dominic Clichee from Nike N7 contacted Delson Suppah Sr. to organize a half time game where the Warm Springs Sacred Thunder boys and girls team played. Suppah inquired about the possibility of a team playing during a women’s game and it happened. Players, coaches and man agers from each of the teams were granted free admission to the college game. Others attending were also offered discounted general admission tickets of $2. Louisville Cardinal fresh man Shoni Schimmel is hav ing a great season. At the end of last week, she was leading the Big East Conference in assists with 126, an average of 5.5 per game. In the Big East, Schimmel is in the top ten players in steals, with an average of 2.2 per game. She’s made 65 three-point shots, most in the conference. She’s the second- leading scorer on the Cardi nals, with an average of 13.4 points per game. Louisville is 5-4 in the tough Big East Conference. They play at home on Sun day, Feb. 13, against West Vir ginia. Schimmel grew up in the Pendleton area. She has many relatives on the Warm Springs Reservation. Her grandparent in Warm Springs is Bpbby Eagleheart. Their only league loss was to the undefeated LaSalle Falcons on Friday, January 28 with a score of 72 to 53. Coach Rory Oster said he’s pretty pleased with their effort and outcome. “We are leading the league in defense so that is what I am most pleased in.” He also said he’s proud of the ball movement and team play that the team has incorpo rated. “We want to improve in all areas of the game in order to to third in the state in the power rankings. “We’re excited to start the fi nal half of league play and re ally hope to finish as strong as we have started,” the coach said. Two of the teammates are seniors Joella Smith and Cheyenne Wahnetah. They are the co-captains of the White Buffalos girls squad, helping the team to a winning season. The White Buffalos are 4-1 in the Tri Valley Conference league. They had an away game at Gladstone on Tuesday of this week, and then travel to Estacada and North Marion on Feb. 11 and 15.
