CORVALLIS — Young Na
tive girls from the Warm Springs
and Chiloquin communities had
the opportunity to witness the
skill of women’s college basket
ball at the Oregon State versus
Stanford game January 29.
The Warm Springs Sacred
Thunder girl’s basketball team
faced off against the Sprague
River Ducks at halftime of the
college game when they played
over seven straight minutes of
hoops.
The teams batded back and
forth but in the end Sprague
River prevailed with a 2-0 score.
Sacred Thunder coach was
Shawn Harry while Duke
Kimball coached the Sprague
River team.
Sacred Thunder coach
Shawn Harry said it was the girls
second experience playing at
halftime of an Oregon State
game with the first being the
Oregon State N7 game, in
which they played the Sacred
Thunder boys.
“The Oregon State/Stanford
women’s game provided a great
experience because the girls got
to see women play at a higher
level of competition,” he said.

The coach said the various
Warm Springs Enterprises are
the team’s sponsor for the league
but they traveled on their own
to Corvallis.
After the game, each of the
teams was able to get auto

waited a little longer for
Stanford players to come out of
the locker room and did get an
autograph from Jocelyn Tinkle
who is from Montana.
The opportunity evolved af

when Dominic Clichee from
Nike N7 contacted Delson
Suppah Sr. to organize a half
time game where the Warm
Springs Sacred Thunder boys
and girls team played. Suppah
inquired about the possibility of
a team playing during a women’s
game and it happened.
Players, coaches and man
agers from each of the teams
were granted free admission
to the college game. Others
attending were also offered
discounted general admission
tickets of $2.
