March 13, 1997 9 Spilyay Tymoo Sports Hurt Warm Springs, Oregon Yakama Eastside Bulls win tournament. I, mo J' Anthony Mitchell rebounding in a The Yakama Eastside Bulls came away with the Warm Springs Cougars 8th grade & under basketball Championship jackets, which was held February 28 to March 2, at the Warm Springs Community Center. The tourney was set with an four learn pool play Friday and Saturday. On Sunday the eight teams played an single elimination tourney. Tourney Director Austin Greene stated "Everyone got to play at least four games and got something for their efforts. I have been to some tourneys were you can pay up $135-1 65 dollars and the kids get nothing for their efforts, so I decided to reward the kids, that's why each player got something at my tournament." On Sunday Ish Gee Looksh and Redmond played the first game of the day. Redmond controlled the game from start to finish and had a 34-10 half time lead. Redmond had four players in double digits in scoring lead by Bryce Carpenters' 1 6 points. Gabe Walker lead Ish Gee Looksh with 12 points. In game two the host Cougars faced off with the Uswuns. The Cougars prove to have too much talent for the younger Uswuns. The Cougars won by the score of 78-53. The host team were lead by Aaron Greens 2 1 points. Four other players had 11 or more points. Brandon Mitchell scored 16 points to lead Uswuns. ( Game three had the Timbercubs going against the Yakama Bulls. The Bulls were too big for the smaller Timbercubs and won going away by the score of 60-26. Lead by David Andersons' 18 points. The Tigers and Madras Produce played the next game. Madras used its height and quickness to out run the Tigers and won by the score of 81-15. Tony Greene, Madras, lead all score's with a game high 14. Redmond fell behind early and never recovered. The Cougars played good team defense and forced a lot of turn overs in which resulted in easy baskets for the Cougars. The Hrst half ended with the Cougars leading by the score of 32-13. Floyd Frank Jr. had eight first-half points. In the second half the Redmond team made a run at the Cougars lead but the hot shooting Cougars made a couple of three pointers that two by Aaron Greene and Chascn Walker, seemed to take the sails out of the Redmond team. The final score read Cougars 6 1 , to Redmonds 3 1 . Aaron Greene scored 17 and Floyd Frank scored 18 to lead the Cougars. In the other semi-final game the Yakama Bulls played Madras, in a game that had the crowd on its seats for most of the game. The games first half was played even with the Bulls leading by the score of 29-27. Neither team could pull away from each other. AJohn Lee lead the Bulls with 12 first half points. The second Madras played right with the Bulls but the inside outside attack wore down Madras with Lee doing it inside and tourney MVP Joe Nanamkin scoring outside. Combined the two had 36 points. To lead the Bulls lo a hard fought win 56-53. In the final game of the day the Bulls and Cougars played even basketball for the first half, with the Cougars leading by the score of 27 22, with Aaron Greene scoring nine of his 1 3 points. The Bulls could not penetrate the Cougars two-three zone defense and the Cougars had a hot shooting first half. The second half the Cougars lost their shooting touch and the Bulls started to run the ball. The Bulls used an inside attack with AJohn Lee, who scored 10 of his game high 16 in the to November. Golf Pro at Golf Pro Joe Ftauschenburg Warm Springs the Cougars won second half, doing most of his scoring inside the paint. At times the Bulls had a 20 point lead and the host Cougars never got back in to the game. The Bulls coasted to a 63-40 win and the Championship jackets. Joe Lafont added 14 points and Tourney MVP, Joe Nanamkin pitched in 1 3, to lead the Bulls. Aaron Greene had 1 3 to lead the Cougars in scoring.
