i w " i" 10 March 13, 1997 Warm Springs, Orwion SwlyayTymoo Madras girls varsity basketball team win one and lose two at class 3A girls basketball tourney. Madras girl's varsity basketball team posted a 53-41 win. user Reedsport, in its first game at the class 3A girl's state tournamenl at the Salem Armory. Tuesday March 4. This is Madras's first appearance in five years. In the first quarter of play Deece Suppah scored four of the I.ady Buffs 1 2 points and at the end of one Madras lead 12 to eight. In the second quarter Taralee Suppah scored the I.ady Buffs first five points ol the quarter, by hitting a three pointer and a lay-in. Madras also got a lift from I leather Duff who scored eight points in the quarter. Madras scored 1 9 points in the quarter and held a 31-19 lead at half-lime. Taralee Suppah and Heather Duff both had eight points at half-time. In the third Madras kept the pressure on the Reedsport team and lead 43-30 after ihrcc. Madras scored 12 points to Reedsports II points. Kea Wyatt scored four points in the third. In the fourth Taralee Suppah scored 10 Of her game high 1 9 points to help Madras preserve the win. The final score read Madras 53, Reedsport 41. The win puts the Buffs in the quarter-finals against Central who got pass Baker. Taralee Suppah had 19 points to lead the Buffs in scoring and Heather Duff added nine points, plus nine rebounds. Game two Madras vs Central. Madras girls second game at the class 3A tourney was against Central Panthers, who were lead to victory by Sophomore Mandic Little who had 29 points, 20 rebounds and four blocked shots. The final score was Litttle League The Warm Springs Recreation department is now holding Little League Baseball & Softball, as well as the local T-Ball team registration. The sign up sheets will continue to the end of March. Registration cost is set at $20 per player in minors,, major leagues and senior league for boys' and girls'. The local T-Ball will consist of eight team, ages 6-8, will cost $15. per player. Additional youth of the same household will cost 10. each. The following is the break down of leagues based on age, as of August 1. T-Ball Boys' and girls', ages 6 8, eight local teams. Minor league, boys' and girls', ages 8-11, three girls' teams and two boys' teams. Major league, boys' and girls', ages 9-1 2, three boys' and two girls' teams. Senior league, boys' and girls', Madras Boys The states 1 ranked team the Madras boys White Buffaloes started off slowly against the Vale Vikings. In their first game of the OSAA US Bank class 3A boys basketball tournament. The Buffs used an 22-6 run in the third to advance to the quarterfinals. Scott Riddle and Brian Miller lead the charge in the third. In the first, Madras and Vale played even basketball, the score after one was 12 to 12. Scott Riddle had six first quarter points. In the first quarter Madras held their own and used lough defense to slay close the score after one 12-10 Centrals' Little had eight points to lead the Panthers. In the second Madras stayed with Central and at the end of the first half Madias was down 29-27. Madras kept by forcing 14 first half lurn overs and having only five themselves. In the first half Central made nine field goals and was 9-15 from the free throw line. Madras made nine field goals and was 7-15 from the free throw line. In the third quarter Madras missed is first four shots. Deece Suppah pick up her fourth foul with 4:55 left in the third. Central built its lead to 37-31 with 2:36 left in the quarter. At the end of three Madras was down 39 33. Little had 19 points in three quarters of play. In the fourth Madras was down by seven most of the way, until Taralee Suppah hit a three pointer to make the score 50-46 with 1 :43 left in the game. Madras was then forced to foul and Central put the game away by making its free last six free throws, Little added a field goal for the final score of 57-48. In the second half Madras made 9-30 field goal attempts, one of three from the three point line and two of four from the free throw line. Ccniral made 7-19 field goals, zero of one from the three point line and made 14-23 from the free throw line. Madras was out scored 28-21 in the second half. Little from Central lead all scores with 29 points. Madras was lead by Taralee Suppah who had 21 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and six steals in 32 minutes of play. tryouts to begin April 7-10. ages 13-15, one team each for boys' and girls'. Amount of the teams on those youth registered by March 28, could increase or decease by set date: so please help out the Recreation Department out by registering in time. So the adequate teams are made available. All coaches, interested in returning as head or assistant coaches, will need to contact the Recreation Department office, so that changes can be made and vacated slots can be filled by voluntcercoaches. You may contact Austin or Andy if interested. Major boys' and girls' try outs have been set for Monday and Tuesday, April 7-8, with the Minor boys' and girls' try outs set for Wednesday and Thursday, April 9 10. The start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Papoose field, and the girls' Softball fields. Try outs are use a 22-6 run Riddle's six with six of his own. The game was the same in the second quarter and at half-time the score was tied at 26 apiece. Dearorff had 1 2 first half points and kept Vale in the game. In the third, Madras came out and showed why they're ranked 1, by hold Vale to three field goals in the quarter and scored 22 points of their own. Brian Miller got things rolling with two three pointers and Scott Riddle started to work the inside. Madras and the Indians were tied at the end of the first 14-14. Taralee Suppah hit her first shot ac three pointer and Katie Chrislensen scored four points, enroule to eight first quarter points. The Indians Kelly Sorenson off-set Chrislensen by scoring eight first quarter points also. In the second the Indians ran away by out scoring the Buffs 19-5, and had a half-time lead of 33-19. The Indians were lead by Sievi Spaulding who had 12 points at half-time, six coming from two three point goals. Scappoose controlled the boards with an 16-13 advantage and had four more steals than Madras, 6-2. In the third the Indians put the game out of reach by scoring 19 points and holding the Buffs to nine points in the quarter. At the end of the third the score read Madras 28, Scappoose 52. In the fourth Madras never got closer and lost by the score of 64-37. Scappoose was lead in scoring by Kelly Sorenson with 1 5 points, Stevi Spaulding with 14 and Kcllia Sandc with 12 points. Madras was lead by Katie Chrislensen with 12 points. Madras' Taralee Suppah was held to seven points in the game. Suppah who in the other two games averaged 20 points per contest. Suppah was shadowed all day by Scappoose defenders. Madras received the sportsmanship award for the tourney and have hopes for next year losing ' only three players from this years . team. for youth ages 8-12 in both genders and leagues. Senior Boys' try outs will be announced at a later date. All coaches will be meeting in Culver on April 8. This goes for all coaches in Jefferson County in Minor and Majors. A separate meeting will be announced on the Senior league coaches meeting. The 'major league jamboree has1 been tentatively set for Saturday April ; 26, at the Madras Fairgrounds, this will be for both girls' and boys' teams. The first league games are set for Monday April 28. From the equipment manager, Andy Leonard, any and all uniforms, pants, socks that have not been returned from last, we are asking that the children please locate them and return them so that players in this years league have adequate supply of uniforms to wear. In the final frame Riddle scored Madras' first six points and the Buffs never looked back, pulling away with the final score being 67-45. In the fourth Madras outscored the Vikings 19-13. In the second half Madras made four of nine three pointers, 9 of 1 1 free throws and 14 of 24 field goals. Jason Cordes came off the bench to score eight points, pulled down two rebounds and had one steal. For Vale Dearorff scored 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
