The rivalry was groat at the annual

tic review of the financial situation
throughout the country is encourag
ing. Henry Clews of Wall street,
says:
The stock market situation has been
considerably relieved by removal of
doubts concerning payment of the
$5,500,000 notes due this week. For
tunately a receivership has been thus
averted along with all the entangle
ments and disturbances which such
a step would have inevitably in
volved. Had Erie gone Into the hands of a
receiver the effect both at home and
abroad would have been exceeding
ly detrimental to the financial situa
tion in general. What Mr. Harrl
man'9 plans for the future are re
mains to be seen, but Judging from
his past operations they are likely to
be of a constructive order rather than
otherwise.
If it be. as is generally supposed.
Mr. Harriman s ambition to secure a
well advanced, and the season Is ful
ly two weeks ahead of the same time
last year.
Considering the profitable prices
which farm products generally are
bringing, there is little prospect of
any reduction in acreage; and the
general conditions are such that far

there are not many complaints of the
scarcity of labor, which last year ma.

Another very favorable feature is
the great ease of money. In view of
the dull condition which reigns in
trade, and the low prices on which
business Is based, the Indications are
that very' easy rates will prevail, at
least until the crop demands begin

would be no surprise if money were
soon to become a drug In the market.
This does not mean that credit will

Each truck weighs 12,500 pounds.
The feature of construction, the
factor which secures the car against
the dangers of a collision, is the cen
tral box girder 24 inches wide by 19
Inches deep, extending throughout the
length of the car. As a further in
surance against collapsing, its prin
ciple of the cantilever bridge, sus
pended on the trucks at piers.
It is equipped with a new type of
coupler, stronger than anything used
before, and specially designed to
avoid any possibilly of breakage and
the resulting parting of trains. The
floor Is of magnesium cement, laid on
corrugated Iron. The coah is light
ed by electricity, derived from train
generators or storage batteries. The
heating and ventilating are upon the
most Improved principles.
This coach was built by the Penn
sylvania shops at Altoona. Of the
200 all-steel passenger cars ordered,
all are to be built at Altoona, 90 by
he American Car & Foundry company
and 85 by the Pressed Steel Car
company. It Is the declared policy
of the Pennsylvania to have future
passenger equipment of all-steel construction.

Certain adjectives are reserved for
men and others for women. A man to
never called "beautiful." Along with
"pretty" and "lovely" that adjective
has become the property of women and
children alone. "Handsome" and the
weak "good looking" are the only two
adjectives of the kind common to ei
ther sex. Even "belle" has no real
masculine correlative In English, since
beau" came to signify something oth

that "handsome" should have become
