Dr. C XL Coles, former pastor of St. ; Peter's Episcopal church, was in charge of the serv Ices. Burial was In the Masonic cemetery where the Masons con ducted graveside services. "Mr, Dawson died in a Portland hos pital Wednesday after a brief , illness. : Born in Harrogate, Yorkshire county, England, September 18, 1867,. he was left an orphan at , an early age. When he was 14 years he accompanied an aunt to Toronto, Canada. He attended college of pharmacy in Ontario In 1889 he came west and from' Vancouver, BC, rode or wheeled a bicycle to Albany. Arriving here : In July he obtained jobs on farms until fall when he entered the employ of the Foshat & Mason drug stored The following four years he ; spent in their employ and in 1894 started a drug busi ness of his own in a small wooden building on the present site of the Albany post office. In 1898 he moved to a brick building on First street, in which the busi ness is still conducted, and which, at the time -of Mr. Dawson's re tirement tn , 1937, was the second oldest business in operation here continuously under one manage ment. Mr. Dawson also owned and operated a drug store in Newport for several years. From 1937 to 1939 Mr. Daw son served as state representative from Linn county. He had also served on the Albany city coun cil, was a charter member and past exalted ruler of the Elks lodge, and was a member of the all the local Masonic bodies. In 1889 he married Augusta Bridgeford of Albany. Mrs. Daw son died in 1930. Following her death Mr. Dawson, in company with the late F. E. Livengood former manager of the J. C. Pen ney store, made several trips around the world. Previously he had also visited his childhood home in England. - ; Surviving are one son, Stowel, Albany; two daughters, Mrs. Janet Pinkerton, Dallas; Mrs. Anne Washburn, King City, Calif., a brother, George Dawson, Toron to, Can., a sister, Miss Edith Dawson, also of Toronto, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Burial Rites Slated Today ALBANY Funeral services for William L Gearheart, 69. who died at his home in Grabtree Thursday, will be held from the Crabtree Christian church at 2 o'clock today with the Fisher Funeral Home in charge. Burial will be in Willamette Memorial park, Albany. William Gear hart was born in Salem, January 25, 1872, and had spent practically his entire life In Linn county. On October 10, 1900, he married Erva Jordon at Albany. She survives as do six children. Mrs. Velma Beck and Mrs. Olive Munsey, Portland; Mrs. Opal Branson, Corvallis; Betty Jeanne Gearhart, Crab tree; Virgil, Salem; Forrest, Brem erton, Wash. He is also survived by a brother, Charles, and a sis ter, Mrs. G. M. Knox, both of Albany. Closing Date Set For Crowing Tilt i ALBANY Sixty five 4H boys and girls have signed for the corn growing contest of the Bank of Albany , and the garden growing contest of the Murphy Seed store. Of this number 35 of those enter ing will devote their efforts to garden growing and the other 35 to the corn contest. Entrance to the contests closes April first. New Sawmill Keeps Busy LEBANON The new saw mill, which is using only the cores left from the logs used in the plywood mill, is running reg ularly now and so far all its out put has been taken by a local planer. While it has a capacity of about 15,000 feet of lumber per eight hour shift, it is sawing about 10,000 a day now. It cuts only 2x4 lumber. Aaron Ingram and Charles Smith, owners, bought the new est type of machinery, all oper a ted by electricity. This fuel is taken by a local dealer who has also contracted for the sawdust.
