PAGE EIGHT The OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon. Saturday Morning, March 29, 1941 Stock Market Takes Drop Motor, Steels Weaken Volume Slackens and Traders Are Timid NEW YORK, March 28-- The stock market today gave up all of its rallying advantage of the preceding session without any I particularly adverse news to ac count" for the backslide. Slightly lower tendencies de veloped in the list after an early attempt to extend Thursday's up turn met with half-hearted re sponse. Motors and steels weak ened in the third hour and clos ing recessions ranged from frac tions to nearly 2 points. There were few wider dips. ( The one encouraging straw in the retreat was the slackening of volume. Transfers totaled 442,610 shares against 551,190 the day be fore. The Associated Press aver age of 60 stocks was off .2 of a point at 41.4, thus eliminating yesterday's advance of this com posite, j Motors were timid throughout. I While this ; week's automobile production was up. slightly over the previous week, there were warnings " that a drop in output was likely if factories were crippled through shortage of ma terials from strike-bound acces sory concerns. Rails, generally, again were buoyed by the brightening traf fic outlook. Universal Pictures preferred got up 3 on a few transactions Paramount Pictures was up jb after posting a new top for the year. Others emerging with mod est improvement were Loft, West inghouse. International Harvest er and Texas Corp.
