I ,f i. t i . iss East Is Queen i Miss Emma Lou East was chos en queen of the annual high school Civics club carnival last night and her royal princesses were Miss Phyllis Walker and Miss Margaret Baker. Fifteen princesses, representing the vari ous clubs, ran. for queen and were elected by the student body and faculty. The princesses were seated on the high school audi j. torium stage when the announce ment was made Known, miss East wore a dusty rose formal fashioned with full skirt and short puffed sleeves. The candi dates all wore pink camellias in their1 hair and primrose corsages. Miss East represented the Cres cendo club, Miss Walker the Ger man club and Miss Baker the i Future Farmer's club. Other can didates and their clubs were Lorraine King, Nurses club; Patri cia Fish, Latin club; Shirley Ann Bailey, Archery; Fay Waldorf, Home Economics; Alaine Harms, Junior Crescendo; Helen Zielin ski, Pep club; Lorraine Guthrie, Science : club; May Oye, Com mercial club; Carol Young, Snik poh; Helen Wilhelm, French club; Janet Halik, Social Science and Luonna Williamson, Que Dice. Carnival Theme The theme of the carnival was Gay Nineties Medicine Show. Don Bower, president of the Civics club, presided at the coronation which was followed by a style show presented by the Home Economics club. Other numbers Included an insanity trial by the German club, the Pep club fea tured Benny Good Girl and her orchestra; Future Craftsmen pre sented one of Henry Fords first cars, Gay Nineties songs by the Junior Crescendo club and a love story of a Dude Ranch by the Archery club. Judges for the skits were Miss Joy Hills, Miss Kendall, Miss Margaret Burroughs, Miss Vivian Chandler, Mr. Garnie Cranor and Mr. Glade Follis. Fifteen conces sions were enjoyed during the evening in the gymnasium and were arranged by the various clubs. The script was written by Bob Mundt and Keith Hoppes. Don Bower headed the committee in charge of arrangements and oth ers assisting were Margaret For sythe, Barbara Ann Ricketts, Dick Gahlsdorf, Jim Hatfield, Fred Bradshaw, Joe Bowers, Ben ny Colbreath, Elaine Evans, Ann Hoffert, Evelyn Collins, Ben Blake, Reed Shelton, Vesita Es try, Dowd Foster and Mrs. Gert rude Shisler. War Mothers at Davies Home The social meeting of the Amer ican War Mothers was held at the home of Mrs. T. W. Davies on Tuesday. Assisting hostesses were Mrs. Hobbs, Mrs. Arminta Hum phrey, Mrs. F. A. Elliott and Mrs. Minnie Humphreys. Others present were Mesdames D. D. Socolofsky, Jennie Martin, Carrie Lindley, Susie Botts, Mary Simms, J. W. Delap, Mary Lickel, E. R. Cook, R. J. Tea for Britain This Afternoon Slated for this afternoon is the - benefit tea for "Bundles for Brit ain" which will be held at the home of Mrs. Keith Powell on Court street. The interested pub lic is invited to call between 3 and 6 o'clock. The alumnae of Kappa Alpha Theta are acting as host esses for the affair. Proceeds from the tea will be sent directly to the children's ward of Queen's hospital in Lon don. Receiving with Mrs. Powell, president of the Salem unit. Bun dles for Britain, will be Mrs. Clif ford Brown, Mrs. George Hug and Mrs. Taylor Hawkins. Presiding at the urns will be Mrs. Reuben P. Boise, Mrs. Henry W. Meyers, Mrs. Charles A. Sprague and Miss Elizabeth Lord. Salem Folk at Play Opening Governor and Mrs. Charles A. Sprague and Mr. and Mrs. IJoyd Smith motored to Port land last night to attend the ppening of the Portland Civic Theatre play, "Dodsworth." The Smith'i daughter, Miss Barbara Jane Smith, played the , leading role. Miss Smith has been in Portland for the past month lor rehearsals and will return to Salem the first of the week. Last night Mrs. George V. Naderman and Miss Cleonna Naderman were hostesses for a delightful surprise party and shower in compliment to Miss Breithaupt. Surprise Shower The evening was spent in formally and a late supper was served by the hostesses. The evening will be spent informally and covers will be placed for over thirty guests. For Sunday Miss Helen Barrett is arranging a small breakfast party to compliment the bride elect at her home on South 23rd street. Alumnae Bidden Mrs. William Linfoot has in vited the Alpha Phi Alpha alumnae to a buffet supper Mon day night at her Saginaw street home at 6:30 o'clock. The mem bers will present their sorority sister with a gift. The serving table will be cen tered with a crystal bowl of cher ry blossoms and plum colored tapers. Order of DeMolay boys honored their fa thers and guests with a banquet Thursday night at the Masonic temple. The , DeMolay mothers served the dinner with Mrs. George Tucker in charge of ar rangements. - At the meeting which followed the dinner the DeMolay degree was- given to Robert Brown, Don Page, Stanley Prather, Melvin Johnson, Jerry Williams and Rob ert McLauchlan. Mr. James Q. Russell presented majority cards to Loren D. Hicks and Clifford Tucker. Plans were made to send delegates to the conclave to be held in Albany on April 17 and 18. At the conclave Chemeketa chapter will present an invitation to another chapter to obtain the Galloping Gavel which the local group received from the Washington chapter of Portland. Proceeds from the dinner are to be used for the purchase of new uniforms. Tillman Kreft, president of the band acted as toastmaster. Mr. Paul Acton gave the invocation and short talks were given by Mr. Carl Williams and Mr. Vernon Wiscarson. Mr. Doublas iJaquith conducted a quiz program with Mrs. Lyman McDonald, Mrs. S. Dietrick, Mr. J. T. Hopp, Mr. Vernon Wiscar son, Don Reiger and Gilbert Ad ams as contestants. The evening was brought to a close with music by the band. Mrs. J. T. The tables were decorated with spring flowers and above them hung Japanese lanterns. Following the dinner a program was given which included a read ing, "The History of the Pringle Woman's Club," by Mrs. George Adams, two readings by Mrs. Sadie Kottek, and talks by the president, . Stanford Girls Enjoy Vacation Two Salem girls, who are at tending school at Stanford, have been spending interesting spring vacations this week. . Miss Patsy Livesley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Livesley, enjoyed the week skiing at the Sierra club. A district honor went to Miss Livesley when she won the giant slalom race for women of the bay area. Miss Betty Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy H. Simmons, vacationed with several of her classmates at the beach resort, Del Rey, during the week. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. S cellars and Mrs Flora Thomas are spending the weekend in Portland and will attend the Ice Capades at the col iseum Sunday night, . - . Mr. and Mrs. S. B.
