(SpeetRl to The Journal.) jxewpori, ur., April Zl. The gas schooner Mirene of Astoria, 34 tons register, is on the beach at the mouth of the Alsea river. She left out from here at 7 o'clock this morning for Waldport with a cargo of freight for that place. The beach is sandy at the place of the wreck and It Is thought I that at least the cargo will be saved, and that possibly the vessel may be puuea orr at nign water. There Is no great damage to her hull, and the surf is not high. The gas schooner Ahwaneda also left out here thi3 mprning for Wald port and arrived tnere safely. She was ahead -of the Mirene. She caq not get to the assistance of the distressed vessel as yet, on account of shallow water, but is making every effort. The local life saving crew. full handed, has gone to the scene of the wreck, ana will take off the crew of the Mirene if necessary. One hundred Mexican street labor ers went on strike at Tuscon, Ariz, Seven hundred thousand people are all that remain of the once powerful Mongols of China, according to for mer Minister KockhlU. The race is making a futile attempt to stand out independently of the new China regime The market In Wall street showed no signs of weaXenlng and there was no visible war scare, although stocks slumped a little. Government bonds declined a fraction for the reason that a new large issue was probable should the military and naval, campaign open in earnest The Orthodox Friends, In their an nual meeting at Philadelphia, sent a message - to President Wilson urging him ' to find a peaceable solution oi the Mexican' difficulty, and hoping that this nation will not have to dtp Its hands In the blood of he Mexican people. Before a crowd of several hundred people yesterday afternoon the new steel hull for the Port of Portland dredge Columbia was launched at the plant of the Willamette Iron & Steel Works. It was sent on its way by 7- year-ojd Marie Lock wood, daughter of the engineer, J. B. C. Lockwood. in stallation of the machinery which is now In the old hull will not be com menced till late this summer, that no time be loet n prosecuting dredging deemed urgent. . When the big hull was released it had 250 feet to slide. Gathering speed. it took the water as gracefully as a speed boat. The momentum obtained the launch showing unusual power and during the slide carried the vessel clear straightening the steamer when the Ocklahama wan unable to aid her. After getting Hear of the Burnside bridge, the S!.uver steamer Cascades was catlad Into use, and the Lonsdale was taken to tli Municipal Dock No. 1 without further trouble. The Lord Lonsdale was delayed four hours here through a libel suit filed gainst her by Closset & Devers, al leging 11600 damages to coffee con signed from Europe through "sweat ing." The suit was amicably settled. and the steamer proceeded on her way to sea about 6 o clock. of the dock, where the steamer Pronto took it In charge and towed It back to the dock. ! The Columbia's new hull Is built along different. Unes from the hulls of the other Port of Portland dredges. Tr.stead of having square bow and stern as do the. others, she is built with a curved bow, which $t is believed will allow of much quicker moving of the vessel. The old Columbia once took 66 hours to move from Cowlitz river boom to St. Johns with three towboats ahold uf her, the new design being Captain j F. T. Groves' idea of getting mofe speed at no additional expense of pow- er. The launching was witnessed by Captain J. W. Shaver, General Mana ger Marcus Talbot and Captain F. T. 1 Groves of the commission. LATE REAL ESTATE AND BUILDING NEWS Today's Happenings with the guilders. Architects, Contractors and ' Realty Brokers. Theatre Plans Ready Thursday. Architect Aaron H.
