jxewpori, ur., April Zl. The gas
schooner Mirene of Astoria, 34 tons
register, is on the beach at the mouth
of the Alsea river. She left out from
here at 7 o'clock this morning for
Waldport with a cargo of freight for
that place. The beach is sandy at the
place of the wreck and It Is thought
I that at least the cargo will be saved,
and that possibly the vessel may be
puuea orr at nign water. There Is
no great damage to her hull, and the
surf is not high.
The gas schooner Ahwaneda also
left out here thi3 mprning for Wald
port and arrived tnere safely. She was
ahead -of the Mirene. She caq not get
to the assistance of the distressed
vessel as yet, on account of shallow
water, but is making every effort.
The local life saving crew. full
handed, has gone to the scene of the
wreck, ana will take off the crew of
the Mirene if necessary. This is the
i first test at rescue to be made by the
Crew with its new power lifeboat.

Before a crowd of several hundred
people yesterday afternoon the new
steel hull for the Port of Portland
dredge Columbia was launched at the

allow of much quicker moving of the
vessel. The old Columbia once took 66
hours to move from Cowlitz river boom
