The contract, though, la a ahort one and will be com nlntait within three or four weeks. Ueorere W. Simons, manager of tha Pacific Bridge company, says the firm only took this government Job be cause at this time conditions were pe culiarly favorably for doing tha work, the river Being low, and the new dredge is the only thing so far found that could take out the obstructing dyke. Tbe Coon Island dyke was been a men ace to the harbor for soms time. It is the remnant of an old Jetty at a bend in tbe river and offers dangers continually to large tramp steamers and sailing ves sels. Tli a government has never before been able to have the rocks and brush that compose the dyke removed. In the meanwhile ballast from Ships in the harbor Is being used to fill th east side streets. It is unloaded from the sailing vessels on barge, and towed to tha dock at the foot of East Main atreet In this way Mr. Simons says considerable fill work can be done, in fact, as much aa If the dredge were working in the river opposite tbe docks. WltLlsnxlSIOfl OF EASUIDE LINE Patrons of Grand Avenue Cars Appreciate Service in Business Section. Patron, of the all-east-slde carllne on Grand avenue will endeavor to have the service extended to Ellsworth street, tha extreme south end of Grand avenue- Aa the people are becoming ac customed to ths service on Grand ave nue they are using it more. While at first tha all east-side cars were little used now the service bould not be dis pensed with, without great inconven ience to the patrons. However It la believed that the ser vice can be appreciably improved and that the oatroniura has increased to such an extent that It would be practicable to extend the aervice ana ir necessary ut on another car. Should the service e extended to the end or Grand avenue, the accommodations now enjoyed would be areata y Increased. Yd 1 . ..V. tA trn A th. fatra for Instance, from Sunnyslde, they must transfer first to Grand avenue rrom Etest Morrison, again to Hawthorne ave nue from Grand avenue ana a tnira time to the Oaks car on Kast Water street from Hawthorne aveniie. If the Grand avenue oar wore extended to the foot of Grand avenue, only a second transfer to the Oaks car would be sufficient With a short walk of a block. Many people have occasion to go fur ther down Grand avenue than to Its In tersection with Hawtnorne, where the east aide car now turns back. It is thought ths extension of the service can bo made without much additional expense and a committee will wait on the streetcar officials to ask- for the change. tnows, arguments were brought itooseveit that caused had died away he had his men flooding the convention hall lobbies and the streets of Philadelphia with buttons and badges bearing the likeness of the vice presidential candidate. And to cap the climax he stated that had brought sev eral hundred thousand of the Roosevelt buttons from New Tork because he had been absolutely certain of his nomina tion. Thus was established Mr. Bib berg's reputation a. a political prophet "Blm" Is no longer In the button busi ness, and those who have succeeded him do not seem to place much reliance in hi. opinion on the subject of the presi dential nominee of the Republican party this year. Speaker cannon does not ap pear to cut much of a figure in tneir trade calculations. The largest manu facturers of campaign emblems In the country, located in Newark, are already In receipt of orders for millions of but ton, from the dealers In such things. These orders show that Taft and Bryan are regarded as the probable nominees. The order for Bryan button, far out number, all the rest, indicating pre sumably that the Nebraska leader is supposed to have a sura thing on the Democratic nomination. The number of Taft button, ordered Is almost a. large. Hughe, button, aro being turned out In considerable quantities, but if Cannon, Knox, LaFollette or anyone else heads the ticket to oe namea at unicago me button makers will have to do some hur ry up work, as there will be no large supply Of these button, maae up in aa vsnce. The campaign this fan win Bring forth a number of novelties in the way of emblems. A number of uninue de signs to be used by both parties are already being made. But the familiar tin button with celluloid facing, the kind that has sprung Into world wide nonuiaritv durine tne oast row years will be used to a greater extent than ever before. These are turned out in such Quantities and at such a low prloe that they can be sold at from 1 to 10 cents, or even slven away, at a profit. Two years ago when the street was filled and planked the city agreed to keep It In repair for four years and unless all the property owners concur In the petition for a Bel gian block pavement sucn aa has been proposed, the street cannot be improved inside of two years. An effort will be made, however, to secure a rcplanklng of the street be fore the rose carnival.
