the Willamette river. The contract,
though, la a ahort one and will be com

Ueorere W. Simons, manager of tha
Pacific Bridge company, says the firm
only took this government Job be
cause at this time conditions were pe
culiarly favorably for doing tha work,
the river Being low, and the new dredge
is the only thing so far found that could
take out the obstructing dyke.
Tbe Coon Island dyke was been a men
ace to the harbor for soms time. It is
the remnant of an old Jetty at a bend in
tbe river and offers dangers continually
to large tramp steamers and sailing ves
sels. Tli a government has never before
been able to have the rocks and brush
that compose the dyke removed.
In the meanwhile ballast from Ships
in the harbor Is being used to fill th
east side streets. It is unloaded from
the sailing vessels on barge, and towed
to tha dock at the foot of East Main
atreet In this way Mr. Simons says
considerable fill work can be done, in
fact, as much aa If the dredge were
working in the river opposite tbe docks.

However It la believed that the ser

that the oatroniura has increased to such

Many people have occasion to go fur

PLANTING LOBSTER.
The downward trend of the lobster
fishery had up to a year or two ago been
apparently uninfluenced by the annua.'

dence that the Increasing output of the
hatcheries Is bearing fruit
Fishermen are reporting more unaer-

many years, says tne jxaiionai ueo-

where' fishing had been abandoned be
cause it did not pay the fishermen are
now making good catches. '
It 1. difficult to understand how the
annual planting of the progeny of 20,000
to 10,000 lobsters can fall to influence
the available supply for the market,
even, if only one lobster fry in each bun
area piantea reacnes maturity; and tne
bureau has occasion to feel gratified
that the decline has now been positively
arrested In localities where large num
bers of fry have been deposited for a
series of years and where there was ab

terment tf nature had remained unaided.
VAYOF STREET PAVING
It has been discovered by ths prop

that it will be impossible to improve the
thoroughfare between tha river and

owner favors the move. Two years ago
when the street was filled and planked
the city agreed to keep It In repair for
four years and unless all the property
owners concur In the petition for a Bel
gian block pavement sucn aa has been
proposed, the street cannot be improved
inside of two years.
An effort will be made, however, to
secure a rcplanklng of the street be
fore the rose carnival. The city en
gineer has advised that the old bents
and timbers burled In the fill be taken
out so that the fill will settle and Dr
mlt a permanent improvement to be put

The dlacovery will not affect the lm

when it Is expected the work will be

College athletic trainers are of many
kinds, being for the most part men who
have worked their way up to their
place, through hard experience. The
oldest of them all Is Mike Murphy, at
present at Pennsylvania. Murphy is
not one of the men who train by rule

Murphy and some of his athletes who
are in the medical school discussing the
