THE ASTORIAN PUBLISHING CO., , The announcement from Chicago that the Harrlman railroad system Is to lei contracts for four mammoth steamships to ply between the Colum bia . river and the Orient doubtless means that tb anticipated clash for that traffic is now about to come. When the Harriman and Hill consol idations were effected it was said that each had In view monopolization of trans-Pacific business, but not until now has the Harrlman line given any evidence of its intention to make the light The Hill Interests have been en joying practically all the traffic. When the southern roads combination puts Its steamships on the route, rates will be cut and bitter warfare carried on. Each system will utilize every possi ble advantage in the bid for business. The effect of this impending struggle on Astoria will soon be apparent In order to place himself in the best pos sible position to light Hill, Harriman must utilise the ocean port This will give him an advantage over the nor thern roads combination that ought to Insure to him the bulk of the traffic. Steamers of the sise to be built must load at Astoria, for they will require a depth of at least 27 feet It is evl dent that Harrlman has received the assurance of the government engi neers that the bar will be deepened to 35 or. 40 feet and that there will be ample water to accomodate his great hips. Bo long as the transcontinen tal work harmoniously together Asto ria will be shut out of the game of commerce; but when the struggle eomes our natural facilities will be employed to their fullest extent The announcement is one of great import ance to this port, for It means that ' our commercial Isolation is to end. The Harriman system, with its hundreds of millions of backing, is not out in the interests of any "particular com munity, but will handle its traflic where the best facilities are obtaina ble. Whentt comes to doing business n a gigantic scale, Astoria affords the harbor, and here the great system will load and unload Its ships. The pres ent announcement gives more hope of settlement of the rate question in As toria's favor than any other piece of news ever before sent out. When the Oregonian flopped over from the most violent defamer of Sen ator Mitchell during a period of more thon 20 yenM to his most fulsome flatterer nearly two years ago. It beat the record as a grand and lofty acro bat says the Eugene Journal, ex-Sccre- tiirv of State Kincaid's paper. The man who turned a somersault over five elephants and lit on his feet was not In it with the agile editor of the great daily. But since the editor has gone to Europe and left the boys in charge of the paper there seems to be an ef fort on their part to break the record again as a grand and lofty tumbler. The paper has all along vehemently opposed a special session of the legis lature for the purpose ot imttln state ..nwm n ilt or fat salaries. At first It raved at the danger of conquest and colonial expansion, but soon flopped over to a rampant expansionist, and was calm and happy except when riled un by some of MeKinleys office holders com ing to the surface, when poor MrKin ley got !t hot and heavy. This happy condition has lasted since Mitchell be came a saint and McKlnley died, and all has been "merry as a marriage bell." There has been no demand for reducing fees or expenses either, and the advocates of a special session have been skinned alive on numerous occas ions and their hides hung up to dry in full view of an admiring public. But. now comes another big flop, an other record breaker, and a special session is favored in drder to secure a big appropriation for the Lewis and Clark exposition! NORTH COAST LIMITED. Is only run by the Northern Pacific between Portland and Minneapolis and St. Paul, through Tacoma, Seattle, Spokane, Missoula, Butte, Livingston, Hillings. Bismark and Fargo.
