Lewis of Chitwood spent several days at Newport, returning to Toledo Tuesday morning. Lewis Montgomery came down from Portland the first of the week to look after hia many interests here. Sonrde Romtvedt was a passenger for Chitwood Wednesday morning where he will build a house on his homestead. Mrs. W. E. Gwynn returned Fri day evening from an extended visit with her mother near Seattle, Washington. Wm. Enos was down from Elk City Tuesday. While here he had another big chunk of that two-by- six taken out of his jaw. Johan Weberg of Chitwood was transacting business in the city Monday. While in town he Called in and subscribed for the Leader. George Wetherby was down from Portland the first of the week look ing after his timber interest in this county. He made this office a call und had his name placed on the mailing list. H. A. Schlecht went to Upper Farm Monday. While there he se cured a contract to build a house for O. A. Leo. The house will be 24x28 feet. Mr. Schlecht returned Wednesday to begin building. Sherm Bateman arrived over from Philomath Monday evening, where ho has been working in the Noon logging camp. Supervisor Sylvester of the Washington Forest Reserve was a visitor for this section last week. The forest service has announced some very important changes in the administration of tho Siuslaw forest the moat important of which is the allowing- of settlement upon all lands which are best suited to agricultural. These pieces are be ing laid out by the surveyors tho are now in the field. Mr. Kingman Brewster, repres enting the Oregon Conservation Commission, was interviewing resi dents of this place last week. The Yachats Telepho-ie Company has announced an increase in the rate for service over its lines. Harlan Haying is the order cf the day and the farmers seem well pleased with their crops and the weather. Miss Delia Rush, principal of the Odell school at Hood River, is sppnding her vacation with her sister, Mrs. Z. A. Kessi. George Kinney is visiting his sis ter, Mrs. Ben MJller, at Mill City. I. R. Payne and P. H. Martin were Blodgett visitors Sunday. Mr. Payne went over for a load of goods for his, store Mr. Martin brought over a manrue spreader he had ordered from the East. R. R. Black bought a Jersey cow of Geo. Kinney last week. Sun pose he will be the next cream shipper. Leonard Grant was hunting bear Sunday but failed to land one. Ed Allen the mailcarrier has set up a tent and is keeping house. He is trying to- have the time of leav ing Philomath changed from 11 a. m. to 9 a. m., thus making an easier arive lor nis team ana we will get our mail earlier in the evening. The Re. R. J. Davenport preach ed at the Grant schoolhouse recent ly. He expects to bo with us regularly through the Summer. An organizer for the Farmers' Union spoke at the Black school house not long since, but on ac count oi tne rain not many were out and no union was formed. Newport On Thursday evening the ladies gave a lawn social on the beautiful ground in front of the Ocean House. The lawn was illuminated by Chinese lanterns hung on cords stretched over the ground. Tables were set, ice cream, strawberries and cream, cake, sandwiches and coffee were served. The Canedy Orchestra furnished the music which gave cheer and pleasure to the people and was greatly appreci ated. The sky was clear and the bay calm and the young people cn joised themselves tipping'the fantas tic toe on the deck of the barge to strains of enchanting music while the older people engaged in telling stories and swapping jokes. The proceeds amounted to $25. which sum will also be used to help in building the ladies' reading and rest room. On Saturday evening a banquet was g wen. at the Ocean Hill Hotel by Prof. J. A. Hill, proprietor. Some thirty invited guents from Newport were present. Mr. Hill acted as toastmaster and announced the name3 of thej speakers. In stating the object of the meeting he said he desired to bring the people closer together m their efforts to improve and aduar.ee the interests of the country, especally in road building. Said he had al ready scent $5000 in improving the Ocean BUI property and was still willing to spend more to improve the country. He believed! a road from Cape street to Agatar Beach as well as thi road that is now be ing buftt from the ball ground to the Borden place, should be com pleted. Mr Hill thought the two roads were needed. Some six courses were served. The supper was appetizing and elegant and was greatly enjoyed by all who par took of it. Mr. Hill is certainly a generous host. After supper a number of short speeches were made all te idihg to show how well the guestsenjoyed Mr Hill's hospitality and how important it is for the people to work together for the improvMment of the conutry. . The speakers were Mr. Blanchard. Dr. Minthorn. F. H. McDonald, Joe Patterson. L. C. Smith, Mr. McKay, C. V. Averill, Elmer Patrick, S G. Irvin O. F. Jacobson and Dr. Car ter. The banquet wa3 a, decided succJ8. Mortons F. H. Brock came over' from Rocca Monday. Mr. Brock has dis posed of his property at Rocca and will leave for the Valltey Tuesday. Quite a number from this place went to Nweport Sunday, John White was a paosenger for Corvallis Monday. Oscar Mayes was over from his homestead Monday. Willis Carter came in from Wells dale Saturday,-returning Monday. Almost everyeone around here have got their hay in. The Nortons base ball team were out practicing Sunday they are anxious for a game with some good lively team. Any team wishing to play them write to the manager. Mr. SndEof Five Rivers leaves every four days for Tidewater with a ton of cream from the up liver and Five Rivers country and takes back a load of freight from here. The little mill here is busy most of the time 6awing lumber and shingles. Summer people are beginning to come now and boats are busy bring ing excrusibnists up river to enjoy cur cheery valley and also oue hos pitality, a Kernville. Sam Gorton just came in with his two sisters. They have been stay ing in Tacoma the last year- They may stay with their two brothers, Arthur and Sam, for a time. Clarence Parmele started the last of the- week to meet his wife and two boys, who will meek him at Sheridan, coming from. Forest Grove, where they have been for the past two weeks. Mrs. Lena Bones and children visited Mrs. Stone oi Taft last week. Some fine fish are being caught. Roy Butterfield brought in some fine ones, and is selling them for $1.50 a piece. 3 Jesse Bosler is seen at least once each week in the Devils Lake neigh borhood. What is the attraction. Mr. Ring, proprietor of the saw mill, has a fine lot of both spruce and fir logs in the boom. Archie Stephens' school is out this week, in the Siletz district.
