to place of beginning, is good and
valid; that you, the said defend
ants, and all of you, have no right,
title nor interest whatever in or to
said lands or any part thereof, und

debarred from asserting any claim

June 20th, 1913, and ending with

Sonrde Romtvedt was a passenger
for Chitwood Wednesday morning
where he will build a house on his
homestead.
Mrs. W. E. Gwynn returned Fri
day evening from an extended visit
with her mother near Seattle,
Washington.
Wm. Enos was down from Elk
City Tuesday. While here he had
another big chunk of that two-by-
six taken out of his jaw.
Johan Weberg of Chitwood was
transacting business in the city
Monday. While in town he Called
in and subscribed for the Leader.
George Wetherby was down from
Portland the first of the week look
ing after his timber interest in this
county. He made this office a call
und had his name placed on the
mailing list.
H. A. Schlecht went to Upper
Farm Monday. While there he se
cured a contract to build a house
for O. A. Leo. The house will be
24x28 feet. Mr. Schlecht returned
Wednesday to begin building.
Sherm Bateman arrived over from
Philomath Monday evening, where
ho has been working in the Noon
logging camp. He has' accepted a
position on the port dredger in the
place of Bob Mann, who last week
was injured by a fall,

and one-half inches thick, laid cross

some very important changes in

An organizer for the Farmers'
Union spoke at the Black school
house not long since, but on ac

out and no union was formed.

On Thursday evening the ladies
gave a lawn social on the beautiful
ground in front of the Ocean House.
The lawn was illuminated by
Chinese lanterns hung on cords
stretched over the ground. Tables
were set, ice cream, strawberries
and cream, cake, sandwiches and
coffee were served. The Canedy
Orchestra furnished the music
which gave cheer and pleasure to
the people and was greatly appreci
ated. It was the first social of its
kind ever held in Newport and it
waa a success,

this splendid outing1 to the fullest
extent. The sky was clear and the
bay calm and the young people cn
joised themselves tipping'the fantas
tic toe on the deck of the barge to
strains of enchanting music while
the older people engaged in telling
stories and swapping jokes. The
proceeds amounted to $25. which
sum will also be used to help in
building the ladies' reading and
rest room.
On Saturday evening a banquet
was g wen. at the Ocean Hill Hotel
by Prof. J. A. Hill, proprietor.
Some thirty invited guents from
Newport were present. Mr. Hill
acted as toastmaster and announced
the name3 of thej speakers. In
stating the object of the meeting
he said he desired to bring the
people closer together m their
efforts to improve and aduar.ee the
interests of the country, especally
in road building. Said he had al
ready scent $5000 in improving the
Ocean BUI property and was still
willing to spend more to improve
the country. He believed! a road
from Cape street to Agatar Beach
as well as thi road that is now be
ing buftt from the ball ground to
the Borden place, should be com
pleted. Mr Hill thought the two
roads were needed. Some six
courses were served. The supper
was appetizing and elegant and
was greatly enjoyed by all who par
took of it. Mr. Hill is certainly a
generous host. After supper a
number of short speeches were made
all te idihg to show how well the
guestsenjoyed Mr Hill's hospitality
and how important it is for the
people to work together for the
improvMment of the conutry. . The
speakers were Mr. Blanchard. Dr.
Minthorn. F. H. McDonald, Joe
Patterson. L. C. Smith, Mr. McKay,
C. V. Averill, Elmer Patrick, S G.
Irvin O. F. Jacobson and Dr. Car
ter. The banquet wa3 a, decided
