Fay, who died by his own hand at Coos Bay not long since, committed suicide in San Francisco "Wednes day night by tak ing morphine. His wife's father had left an estate to Mrs. Kind, of which Kind had charge. He left a note to his wife saying ho had squandered the entire properly! which was the reason of his act. This will be the-regular market price for the present crop. Jerry Nunan denies that he has any present intentions of purchasing the California street property mentioned 'by our cotemporary Ittt-.t week. The Chinaman arrested' last week for passing a counterfeit half dollar Lgave bonds in the sum cf $200 and he has since left for parts unknown. The Celestials had a grand dinner and general spree out on Applegate last Thursday. Villainous brandy and fat pork constituted the bill of fare. Tho statement in the "Times" cf last week that Wm. Fletcher, agent for the "Journal of Fashion," started for Cres cent City last Monday. He found no bogus receipts for subscription to his journal in this place. T. P. Ci-Hale returned yesterday from Portland whither he went a short time ago to purchase machinery for hisfurni turefactory in Linkville. If the peo ple fail to elect him it will be owing to the fact that Siskiyou county is hopelessly given over to tho worship of modern Boutfbonism. From Ben Haymond we learn that work on the new Rock Point bridge is progressing finely anil the structure will probably be finished and ready for travel in about three weeks. There was a large gathering of members of the Masonic Order and other spectators at Ashland last Thursday, to partici pate in, and witness, the laying of the corner Stone of tho Masonic building. Tlie whole programme, was carried out in excellent style, afldi not an event transpired to mar the harmony of the occasion. Many interesting relics and other articles were deposited under the stone, not the least important of which wa a copy of the Sentinel of current date. The oration by Prof. L. L. Rogers is spoken of as able, eloquent and in structive. Smith the spiritist and humbug physician, of whom we wrote a short lime ago, has been sentenced to three years in the penitentiary for counterfeiting. His wife", whom it will be remembered professed to lecture un der spirit control, as they passed through this part of tho State, is liv ing on public charity in Portland, and their daughter is serving out a term in the Multnomah county jail for being accessory to her father's crime. Frightful Runaway. LastSunday T. T. McKenzie, S. Booth, and H. G. Sprague all got into a hack atPlymale's livery stable and started for home, leading Booth's horse behind tho vehi cle. Tlie horses started suddenly and Booth and Sprague were thrown from the buggy. McKenzie managed to get hold of tho lines just as the other man was dashed to the ground on the oppo site from that on which Booth fell, and stopped the horses near1' the residence of K Jacobs. His tour through Oregon and Washington Terri tory, was too much for his feeble frame. CmcORY. Mr. C. Schieffelin, of this county, has growing in his garden a patch of chicory. He has raised it be fore and used it with coffee, and he says it saves about one half the expense in the purchase of that article for a fam ily during the year. The chicory plant resembles the beet and attains about the same size. It is cut in slices ;and dried, then browned and ground in a coffee mill or grated' to' thb consis tency of coffee. About ono pound to four of coffee is used and the mixture, Mr. Schieffelin assures us, is superior to pure coffee. It adds to the flavor of ' the beveragp and not over half the amount centrally used, is necessary. Two and a half inches is its breadth and it will measure three inches lengthways of tlie jaw. i& . "What Came of it. This is the title of a little volume of 320 pages, partly written by Mrs. H. V. This was an unlooked for turn, so part of the surprise party camped un der a tree until 2 A. M. in the morning beforo the waon camo to take them home. Fearful Fall. On last Thursday Henry Waisman, a carpenter, while at work on Manning Jc Webb's barn, fell from near the comb of the build ing to the ground a distance of twenty five feet. He struck on his breast and received a severe though it is not thought fatal shock. His right col lar bone was fractured and ho was otherwiso badly bruised, but at this time he is thought out of- danger. Tlie District Conference of the M. E. Church, South, will be held at Bybee's ferry, commencing on Thursday even ing next.
