X HLAITIFILSTOKV. A young man, who had Icen on a tbree-days' debauch, wandered into the reading room of a hotel where he was well-known, sat down and stared mood ily into the street. Orle gentleman gave her a five-cent piece, and she went to the gentleman spoken of and askHhi& for a penny, adding, "I haven't had anything to eat in a whole day." The gentleman was out of humor, and he said, crossly, "Don't bother me, 1 haven't had anything to cat in three days." The child opened her eyes in shy wonder nntl stared" at him for a moment and then walked slowly to the door.' She turned the knob, and then, after hesitating a few seconds, walked up toliim, and gently laying tho five! cents on his knee, said with a tone of true girlish pity in her voice, "If you haven't had anything to eat for three days, you take this and buy some bread. Perhaps I ccn get some more some where." The young fellow blushed to the roofs of his L'aif ahtf lifting the sis ter of charity in his arms he kissed her two or itireo times in tlelig'lit. At the last meeting of the New York Academy of Natural Sciences St. Jo seph Lcidy read a letter from Mr. 'V, Lorcnz, cmef engineer ot the I plna and Heading Kailroau Jpsiiy referring to a fossil specimen presented to the academy by Mr. William D. JI." Mason, of AVilliamstotfn, Pa, The sjiecimen is a ma.s of coal shale with footprints, and was discovered by the donor at the Ellengowan colliery, in the Mahany coal field. Mr. Lorcnz re marks that it is of i-pocial interest as having been the first sjiecimen of tho kind found in the anthracite coal field. The specimen is an irregular slab, up wards of a foot long, and less flian half the breadth. The tfiper surface is ob scurely ripple marked longftffdinally, and is cimsed in a slant by seven tracks which at8 in pairs, etfeppt one, frr ad vance on the right. The four tracks on the right occupy a line of six inches, and are about an inch and a half apart from those on the left. The more per fect impressions exhibit i6Vr vTdeTy di vergent toes, successively increasing in length from within outwardly, except ing tli it the fourth toe is slightly short er than the third. 1 he expanse of the tracks is about one nch. The impres' sions probably pertain to some salaraan droid animal; and as it had been found useful to refer to fossil foot tracks as the representatives of the Animal by which they were made under distinct names, he would in aicordance with a suggestion ftom Mr. Lorenz,- name tfeff form represented by the1 Ellengowan anthraeis. In tho matter of material prosperity, comfort and con tentment, the English workman seems to have the test opportunities for bet tering himself, but strikes and tip pling are fatal drawbacks to this ad vancement; lit France and Belgium, in spite of low wages aftd scanty means of sustenance, the laboring people' are thrifty and Contented. In Germany the condition of the working classes are most deplorable; destitution and despair seem to starfe them in the face. Tire recent catlktfdakti at Virginia" City was not noticed at all rrt the min ing depths, but only by people on the surface. Their famous earthquake of some time ago, which shook down chimneys antl fire-walls, cracked brick buildings and did other damage, was merely noticed by som'e' of the miner? working in th'o upper Ie'veht, but it did" no damage, not even shaking down loose stones and earth.
