THE KEttEDT F0K BYI'.HOHA.MA. The cure of drunkenesa discovered by a physician in Chicago, has attract ed great attention on this side of the country sinco the publication of the articles in the "Call" and "Bulletin." There is no secret about tho remedy. It was discovered by Dr. d'TJnger of Chi cago more as an accident than as the result of any patheological inquiry. When this physician found by a number of experiments that it was a certain cure, he did not hold his discovery a secret, as a quack certainly would have done, but he gave the Mtrticulars of his discovery to the public in a pamph- let publisheo. He cited tn that tiam- icuroly the way know al ofH. citieens jo, mat a great many or the worst cases of drunkeness were cured by this simple remedy. Wo do not know of a failure, although there might have been Mich. If a cure is expect ed, the ono condition is to follow the directions. Some days ago we gave tho formula for preparing tho medi cine substantially as it appeared in Dr. d'TJnger's pamphlet. That direc tion luis been found sufficiently explicit for the use of many druggists here. It is presumed that every com)ctent pharmacist in this city can compound the medicine. We here insert sonio of the communications which reach us: Editor Bulletin: I noticed an arti cle in your issue of yesterday on the fcubject of "Dypsomania." "B" will oblige a number if he will inform them as to the manner of preiaration of the bark, or of borne druggist who under stands how to prepare and give in structions for taking it. Inquirer. San Francisco, July 18th. Editor Bulletin: Referring to an ed itorial in "Bulletin of 16th instant en titled "The Cure of Drunkeness," I dc- o say that a number of icrsons lotud your former article on tho subject, and were very anxious to try it, but as no definite formula for its preparation is given, and no place indi cated where the projwrly prepared "Cure" may be had, they have been un able to do so. If it will do one-half of what is. claimed for it, it will be one of the greatest blessings of modern times, and every facility should be given, by the press and otherwise, to its procure ment. Will you advise me where the preiaration may be had. Yours truly, J. P. L. Oroville, July 18, 1879. In answer to these communications we have no particular information about where the medicine can be had, except that we learn that Reddington fc Co. have imported or have sent an order abroad for a supply of the par ticular kind of bark used. If an or der is sent to any competent druggist he will probably fill it. The rem edy has novv attracted so much attention that all the best apothecaries hero ci ther have or will procure tho formula. It is probably also that some xjf them will keep tho medicine put up for imme diate use. To meet further enquiries we reproduce tho abbreviated formula. wcuroly tho B know ultafirj aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa1 nf tfnfeeaaaaaaaaaaPr Dr. d'Unger" says "I take a pound of the fresh quill red Peruvian bark) and soak it in a pint of diluted alcohol. Then I strain it and evaporate it down to a half a pint. I give the drunken man a teaspoonful every three hours, and occasionally moisten his tongue between doses the first and second days. It acts like quinine. The patient can tell if ho is getting too much. Tho third day I generally re duce the dose to a half a teaspoonful, then to a quarter teaspoonful, then down to fifteen drops, ten and five drops. The medicine is continued from five to fifteen days; in ; the ex treme cases thirty days. (Seven is abbutrSne average. ' r The bark is known among druggists as "Cinconcha Rubra." The di co erer of theremedysaysthat of the many hund red cases treated by him, has not known an entire failure. Ho considers that form as drunkeness which results from an insatiable appetite, a disease, and treats it as such. Wheh the appetite has lieen vholly destroyed, he considers that the patient is radically cured. He will not drink if he has no desire, or if he has a strohg repugnance to liquor. Ono or two instances cited from Dr. d'Ungcr's pamphlet, by the wny, are not more striking than those of which we now have personal knowledge. A professional man. a drinker for twenty years, "the last few of which he was kept alive by "adminis tering a quart of whisky daily." says: There is a Inottle of whiskey on my shelf, placed thero last Tuesday, and it remains untouched. I would not take a drink of it for 500. My wife looks on with perfect amazement. I have resumed business, and men who knew me in my worst days of drinking, tell me I look one hundrd per cent, better than I ever did. My salvation is com plete; I have not the slightest appetite or desire for liquor. If a simple complete remedy has been found for drunknees substantially as described, it is hardly to lie Wonder ed that so many are Incoming intercst- edjLi it. Nearly every one, if hot ad dikko the excessive use of alcoliol- tanco who is, and whose rescue .by or dinary means is doubtful. He may render him a mdat important service by tlirectly or indirectly cal ling his attentioh to this remedy. Many are so sphsltlve that they cannot be approached directly, but in some ono of the ways which friendship can devise, their interests can Ikj enlisted in the cure. In two cases where cures were effected, within our personal knowledge, tho attention of the suffer ers was enlisted in somo indirect way through tho kindness of friends. The other steps may be less difficult lo take. Tho philanthropy which seeks to rescue a victim far gone in drunk enness, by placing within his reach a remedy, assumes a practical form. A single individual rescued through tho good offices of a friend, would, be an amplo recompense for tho effort made in his behalf. S. F. "Bnl letin." DALLYI.M. WITH DEATH. The yellow fever is again raging in Memphis and spreading througout the the South, like a besom of death. It is stated that satisfactorily evidence has been furnished as to how the j "1 low fever this year broke out iu Mem phis. It first victim v,-., u shocmak cr named Mulbrandon, of whom it is related that his wife lost several rel atives by tho fever last year. The household furniture and other effects of these people were removed to Mul brandon's residence, and as a Mem phis corresiondcnt of ono of the East am pajiers states, among these effects was a quality of clothing and bedding that had been used by the deceased rel ative, including even the shceti nnd blankets from their death beds. These articles had been packed away in box es, without being fumigated, until warm weather came, when they were taken from the boxes and exposed to the sun. Asa consequence the scourge was let loose, and it is' now simply a question as to when its ravages will be stayeik It is the rule, in all infected localities, either to burn or lil cloth ing which had been used by persons dying with the fever, and here it is soen to be a dangerous thing to depart from so judicicous a precaution. "Sleepy Tom," the imccr, mado a mile at Chicago last Saturday in 2:12 the fastest time .on record. a THE AUK Ol' W0.1DLK. A recent English writer, reviewing the scientific and industrial achieve ments of the past half century, calk this "the age of wonders," and refertf as follows to a few out of the many modern marvels that fully justify tha appellation! We have sCen a sdbsldilcd which our atlcestors proudly Used to obliterate pencil mark so molded to our use as 10 make man almost all anlphibtoiii rti mal; a noxious vapor, from which tJ would turn with disgust, madci meatisof a brilliant light, whielii bles the night almost to rival tl Womp e.Anii rQ SPrponsW them an instrument oi ture, divested of its horror by a disci ery which gives a temporary inscn bility to pain, which enables tho siiT ering patient to wake from notliir.-' more than a troubled drcam and find that over, under which, without tlii-j his fortitude might have faltered, or? his constitution sunk. We have secit a power which is inexhaustiblo so'o'ijf; as tho elements of firo nnd water re main, tho effects of which our grand mothers mayhavo witnessed with a sigh, when terminating, by asinMril crash, the serene music of tho tea-kettles; but which, by tho combined c'" ectt of modern science, has become the very hands and feet of the world, tho great anil, almost universal manufact urer for man; tho great propeller by which wc rival the llight of the bird, and which so unites tho human family that degrees of latitude and longitndo are little more than milestones on tho great highway of tho world. And, lastly, we have seen thatssubtlc power which our ancestors recognized only in tho minute spark of tho electric cir e'e transformed into iho faithful, uil tiring agent of tho human mind, bear ing its thoughts from ono end of a vast continent to tho other with an nc curacy which would bo in vain lookcb for in any other messenger, and with a sjieed which far outstrips the action of tho mind which formed them. "Quick as thought" will not do j fl, and "quick a3 light ae ning" has become a practical, not mere a figurative expression. It suits the purpaso of a certain class of prurient public speakers and writers to malign aud traduce tho women, who arc employed as clerks in tho dif ferent Departments at Washington. To doubt that such wholesale charged arc base calumnies would bo to blur the fair name of women with a cowardly ly He. While wo do not approvo of woman making it tho especial object of their lives to secure clerkships it is gratifying to bo assured from a reliable sources tho employment of female clerks iu Washington has become an estab lished thing, and as it would seem, pure ly on merit. At tho present there aro employed in all the departments 1,300 women, at salaries ranging from 900 to 1,800. But one receives this high est amount, though many receive from 1,200 to 1,100. Few of them re sign, and leave their places to marry and settle into domestic life. Tho greatest experts in counting money and detecting counterfeit"! aro among the lady employes. The appointment of women to these places was first made by Secretary Chase in 18G2, ami tho highest salary paid was 000. Their usefulness and aptness for tho work being demonstrated, they havo steadily increased in numbers, and have been able to command salnries approximating the wages of the men who formerly occupied these -pistes. Few of the many ill things prophesied as the result of such an innovation have occurred, ami the heads of de partments would seriously object to making any chango now. It is a gratification to see new fi-dds of use fulness opening up to the women of tho laud, more especially when they prove themselves so fully competent as in tho departments at Washington. Tho Indiananolis Journal nrcsenls these contrasts: "Bayard depend h mamlv on his financial reconl and ren- eral reputation for consistency a nd iairness; iiiurmaii on lus Senatorial reconl and subserviency to the South; Hendricks on his non-committalism, his respectability, nnd popularity with tho masses, aided by an occasional ad dress liefore some Southern agricultu ral society or other association. Out Tildcn discards all these methods nnd confines himself to a still hunt to can- turo the political leaders. This ho is doing all over tho country by agencies which he understands how to uso bet ter than any other man. k ekv-Vsr7iVi-JT i.? 1 t C2 02..2.mUU -: . V .---.
