The above probably does not give just the cornet situation here. The Album- team ! will probably, lie ready to play elsewhere, and the Salem team will probably complete the season. Pendleton E 0: It would seem to a man who has made no ex periment that a sack holding two bushels of sand would be a pretty hard load for a horse to drag along the ground, but it won't do to jump at conclusions. A tall, angular stranger with sharp features and shrewd face who has been eneamned in Brer's grove for about two weeks past made a bet with a Pendleton man that the above feat could be performed a horse being wagered by each. They took an animal weighing some 800 pounds, that Expressman Daniels has lieen driving, to a point above Byere" mill. A big crowd followed, and watched tiie horse pull the sack of sand with ease for 100 feet or more, a rope a quarter of a mile long being used, riV? stranger is plus a borse. and tradition hath it that he has made similar winnings in other places. However, the splints and bandages had never been displaced by his movements. He wanted to know if they had been to the show, and receiving a negative reply re marked that he had seen a whole menagerie in company with some of the town's most prominent people. The gold and silver problem has already landed one vic tim in the insane asylum. This is Andrew Ihussen. a man 49 years of age, hailing from Portland. He has a system by which, with the yelks of eggs. he makes gold out of silver and insists that there is no need of free coinage. He is so demonstrative at times in bis endeavors to convince people of the success of his system that the services of a straight jacket are needed. He also says he believes the Bible is made out of cotton, but as long as the hens hold out the gold and silver question will remain solved. Statesman. The h e Law. Review. As Excrruso Fire. The Yillard Hotel was burned at Pendleton vesterdav aftor- llla was alwmt h , t: '. le"' ot the following in connection with it. The firemen worked like heroes. They in several instances risked life and limb. In attempting to pull down the Main street wall, they were compelled to ascend, in the face of angry flames, ladders leaning against a tottering support. Had the ladders but slipped, the brave workmen would have been hurled to an awful death in the fiery maelstrom below. Suddenly, amidst all the excitement, the cry went up: "There's a woman inthelmniinjf Itiilding!" Intense excitement prevailed, and all shud dered at the thought. Hurried inquiry, however, ascertained the fact a sick woman had been removed barely in time to nave her life. A Sad Drowsixo. A gentleman over from WiUapa yesterday brings the sad in telligence of the throwing of the wife of Key Crouch of that place on Saturday even ing. Mr and Mm Crouch and baby had gone out on the bay in a tmall row boat, and at a request from Mrs Crouch to be al lowed to row, the two attempted to change place. This resulted in the boat rocking violently, and in their endeavors to steady it, they were thrown into the water, com pletely capsizing the boat. Mr Crouch grasped the baby and threw it upon the upturned boat, and immediately looked around for his wife, who had dissappeared beneath the water never to return. Up to yesterday morning'no trace of the body had been found, although a diligent search had been made. Astonan. Didn't W'ubk. The rain making exper iments at Heppner last week were not suc cessful. About If) o'clock a bombardment was begun and kept up until noon, but without any sign of rain. It Was resumed in the afternoon, but still the much needed shower came not. From Eight Mile and other sections came word that they. too. were trying the rain making experiment, it having been agreed previously to make the attempt of making clouds and wring them over the grain fields of Morrow county on that date. Not withstanding the failure nature may yet furnish what man has not At any event there will be considerable grain raised in this section.
