The above probably does not give just the

A Peculiar Bet. Pendleton E 0: It
would seem to a man who has made no ex
periment that a sack holding two bushels
of sand would be a pretty hard load for a
horse to drag along the ground, but it won't
do to jump at conclusions. A tall, angular
stranger with sharp features and shrewd
face who has been eneamned in Brer's
grove for about two weeks past made a bet
with a Pendleton man that the above feat
could be performed a horse being wagered
by each. They took an animal weighing
some 800 pounds, that Expressman Daniels
has lieen driving, to a point above Byere"

100 feet or more, a rope a quarter of a mile

The Qcestios Settled. The gold and
silver problem has already landed one vic
tim in the insane asylum. This is Andrew
Ihussen. a man 49 years of age, hailing
from Portland. He has a system by which,
with the yelks of eggs. he makes gold out of
silver and insists that there is no need of
free coinage. He is so demonstrative at
times in bis endeavors to convince people of
the success of his system that the services of
a straight jacket are needed. He also says
he believes the Bible is made out of cotton,
but as long as the hens hold out the gold
and silver question will remain solved.

with it. The firemen worked like heroes.
They in several instances risked life and
limb. In attempting to pull down the
Main street wall, they were compelled to
ascend, in the face of angry flames, ladders
leaning against a tottering support. Had
the ladders but slipped, the brave workmen
would have been hurled to an awful death
in the fiery maelstrom below. Suddenly,
amidst all the excitement, the cry went up:
"There's a woman inthelmniinjf Itiilding!"
Intense excitement prevailed, and all shud

however, ascertained the fact a sick woman
had been removed barely in time to nave
her life.

gone out on the bay in a tmall row boat,
and at a request from Mrs Crouch to be al

place. This resulted in the boat rocking
violently, and in their endeavors to steady
it, they were thrown into the water, com
pletely capsizing the boat. Mr Crouch
grasped the baby and threw it upon the
upturned boat, and immediately looked
around for his wife, who had dissappeared
beneath the water never to return. Up to
yesterday morning'no trace of the body had
been found, although a diligent search had
been made. Astonan.
