Chemically treated, one pound of coal will make enough: magenta to color 500 yards of tlannel, vermillion for 25G0 yards, aurine for 1 20 yards, and alizarine sufficient for 156 yards of cloth. The old custom of ringing the curfew has been reinstated in the villages and towns of Canada, in accordance with an act passed at the last session of parliament. It re quires that all children under 17 shall be off the street at 9 o'clock, the hour of the ring ing of the curfew. The Orrgonkm says: "The so-called Sherman act is an attempt at compromise betaeca two radically op posite poshions." Now, this is far from the fact. The truth is, it waa a scheme to keep President Harrison out of a '-hole." It wis to relieve him of the necessity of puttiug himself on record as being for Or against free coinage. This is the plain, un varnished truith. The time is not far off when Rogue liver valley fruit will have a prom inent place 00 tbe tables of the nabobs of the United States. Holding a session of congress in hot weather is perhaps a good idea. There will be no trifling with public interests or diUt tory motions to delay legislation if the thermometer stands where it usually does in Washington during August and Sep tember. The uncomfortableneas of tne weather bas more than once humid legis lation so that representatives might rejoice themselves in cooler climes. But congress ought to know that it is not chosen to enjoy or amuse itself, but to serve the pub lie. In tbe country farmers are used to doing muck of their hard work when the thermometer is uncomfortably high, and what they do they expect their representa tives not to shirk. A flit car costs aD0.11 jcK, a flat-bottom coal car $475, a gondola drop bottom $$uo, a double-hopper bottom cca'. car $525, a double -hopper bottom coke car $540, a box car tftjo, a slock car 855c, a fruit car (ven tilated) $700 and a refrigerator car $800. A foui-wheeled caboose costs $550, and an eight-wn?e'ed one f 7-0. The prices given 00 the above cars include power brakes and venicle- plane couplers. A 50 foot mail and baggage car $4500, a second-class coach $4800, first-class coach $5500, while a first-class Pullman car costs $15 000. There is a general ides that the President's salary of $50,000 a year is all that he re ceives, and that, when compared with the salaries paid the sovereigns of Europe, this sum is not enough. This is a mistake. In addition to bis salary, the President receive $36,064 to nay the salaries of his clerks an 1 subordinates. His private secretary has $325; his assistant secietar, $2250; the stenographer ge,p $iSj,feach of the five messengers $1200, the steward $1800, each of the two doorkeepers $1200, while other employees are paid in proportion, down to the man who takes care of the fires, who receives $864. In addition, $8000 is allow ed for incidental,, such as stationary and carpets; $i2,5oo for repairs and refurnishing. $2500 for fuel, $4000 for ihe greenhouse, sod $15,000 stable, gs and other lnciden tals. In all, the President and his I ouse costs the country over $125,000 a year. Not ma'iy people know how much ma Urial en'ers into tht compuition of a first class passenger car. To build a passenger csr of the best kind requires about 2400 feet of poplar, 3400 feet of ash, iooo feet of white pine and 2300 feet of yellow pine, 500 fest of the best otk, 400 feet of the strongest hickory, 400 leet of cherry, 400 feet of maple vsreer, and perhapr small amounts of other woods. There are four pans of is heels and auks, two pairs of passcntftr -:ar tu:ks. about oo pound of Iron, 7 o pound, of castings, 300 pounds of galvanize! Ires and 250 sheets of tin. Then add screws, chandeliers, air brakes, sash balances, 6j or 70 glass panes for the win cow slid doom, stoves, seat fixtures, lampr, door locks, knot's and hi.ige, biket rackr, winr'ow lifts, window fasteners and seat spring, and you have most ot the hard ware. 1 nen ,nere are about 200 yard of plush, one hundred yards of sheeting and 300 pounds of hair. When all these things are taken into accoont no won der can be felt tht. a passenger coach cos's over $4000. Tnete is eiror, however. Now. the tiuth i, that, practically, there Is no difference between the money planks in the two party platfoin except in the part here democrats denounce the Sherman law. Had the Orttaman been just as candid as one with a search light for truth would be It would have given its readers both planks in full and not garbled them. The demo cratic plank Is as follows 1 "We denounce the republican legislation known as the Sherman act of 189) as a cowardly makeshift, fraught with possibili ties of danger in the future which should make all of its supporters, as well as its author, anxious for Its speedy repeal. We hold to the use of both gold and silver as the standard money of the country, and to the coinage of both gold and stiver wicnoui discriminating against either metal or charge for mintage, but the dollar unit of coinage of both metals most be cf equal intrinsic and exchangeable value, or be adjustable Oirouch international agreement. or by such safeguards of legislation as shall Insure the maintenance 01 tne pauiy w w two metals, and the equal poeer of everv dollar at all times in the market and io the payment ol debt; and we demand that all paper currency shall be kept at par wun arid redeemable ia such cola. We insist upon tnis policy as especvauy ottmai; m the protection of the farmers and laboring classes, the hrat and most oeitnceiess vic tims of unstable money and fluctuating cur rency." Tne plank in the republican . platfoim Is as follows : ' The American people, from tradition and interes, favor bimetalism, ana the republican demands the us of both gold and silver as standard money, with restric tions and under such provisions, to be de termined bv legislation, as will secure tbe maintenance ol the parity of values ot the two metals, so that the purchas ing and debt paying power of the dollar, whether of silver, gold, or paper, shall be t all times equal. Tbe interests of the pro ducers of the country, its tanners and it worklngmen, demand that every dollar, paper, or coin, iasued by the government, shall be is good as any other. Wc com mend the wise and patriotic steps ahead) taken by out government to secure aa inter national conference, to adopt such measures as will Insure a parity In value between gold and silver for sse aa money throughout Ik. -M the acrid Thus it will Se seen that there Is but sUgbt diflerence between the two parties so far as pisiform go, (sad they ars usually of ao very great moment.) S1ICK to FACTS The financial question Is a big one aed it 1 it best for every newspaper writer, and ; every individual, ia fact, to keep strictly oa the line ot facte when treating of it The Faruurt Journal, published St Portland, publishes a long article pointing out what U believes to be tbe many weak- i neaaes of the Sherman la., aad then closes, I up with this statement: This is the legislation of tSc old parties gentlemen. This law was not passed by the crazy populists of tbe Kansas legislature, and no people's party man In congress voted for it. The grest vte.m m. the smart men, ike Bioger Herman and Joe Doiph. are ail n ihe old parties you know. Of course no peoples party man voted for the Sherman act tor that party had no 1 ..... n . . representative io that congress. But a bat ' we particularly desire to call the at tec tion of our esteemed co tempo rary to is the fact that the Sherma- law is the legislation of the republican party. Not a single demo crat in congress voted for it . A republican house and a repub'icm senate psssed the bill and a republican president approved it. Let us give our readers facts whether we make any political cap tal out of them or not. wmtT ih a cau. i.ois It is a Isan which cm b; canceled, or "called," at any lime, aod then the borrower will be required to return tbe money bor rowed, or forfeit the stocks, bonds or other property that he ha put np ss security, that is, they will be sold to satisfy ihe debt. Both are wrong, and both aolu- j lions are based upon personal aggradixe-' ment . The free coinage of silver would lead to wide spread unrest and would cause foreign holders of American securities to surrender them and demand their payment in gold as is stipulated and specified in the contract This demand could not be met and disastrous financial and business re verses would naturally follow. It is plain therefore that the panacea does not lie in the free coinage theory. As for the na tional banks any attempt to give them a new lease of life will call down the wrath of the people upon tbe party responsible for it. So, tx, is tbe issuance of bonds in tbe interest of these concerns to be guarded against. If we are to increase tbe circulat ing medium by a paper issuance, reserving gold as a commodity to adjust internation al obligatiot and that is the logical de duction, let that paper be issued by the government direct. Tne claim that when issued to and through institutions subordi nate to the government currency ia made more secure is tbe veriest bosh. What better security can be had than tbe government ? V.' hat better does tbe borrower or. lender, payee or payor ask or require? It would cettainly appear that our additional cur rency most be paper, and when we reach that point let the government issue direct, bane said issuance upon the faith, honor and integrity of the nation, make it a lega tender for all obligations whatsoever and we.will have a dollar that will stay at borne and render every service required of it. It s evident, however, that both these ele ments will exert every effort to influence legislation favorable to them, but with con gress democratic and a chief executive fear leas in the discbarge of his doty the coun try at large can await action with tbe ut mot contentment, satisfaction and confi dence.
