Clerk, in this city, on last Monday afternoon.
In fact it might be called an exciting elec
tion. 271 votes were cast, the largest num
ber ever polled in the District, the previous

On Friday evening of next week, March
20th, 1885, Mrs. Dr. Ownes Adair, of Port
land, will deliver a lecture at Crawford's
Hall, under the aaspices et the W C T TJ.
Her subject will be "The necessity of in
struction in onr public schools upon the evils
of alcohol and hereditary diseases resulting
from its use." Mrs Dr Adair has made a
thorough study of this subject from a scien
tific stand point, both in this country ard
in Europe, and being a lady of fine literary
attainments, may be depended upon to give
a very interesting as well as instructive lec
ture. Good music will be furnished for the
occasion. Admission, 25 cants. It will pay to

Lsst Tuesday while Johnnie, a ten year
old son of S F Crooks, of Miller's Station,
was carrying an ax under his arm he stum
bled and fell, the blade of the ax striking one
of his fingers, cutting it off at the second
joint leaving the flesh in a bruiied and
mangled condition. He was brought to this
city, where Dr Maston attended him, dress
ing his linger in a skilful manner, wbieh
greatly relieved the little fellow from the
painful effects of the accident.

In the Willamette Valley, in the great foot
race between Frank Law Is, of Cor vail is,
and C F Gibson, which occurred at San
Francisco, last Sunday, we glvo the tele
graphic account of it, as published In the
Portland "News." It shows what an
"awful" uncertainty foot racing is, and
may convey an idea of how scarce change
will be for sometime among sporting men
of Cor vail is :
The 125 vard foot raee at Coutral Park
thin afternoon between Charles F Gibson
and Frank Lewis, proved to be one of the
best contests of the kind ever seen on tite
coast. The race was for fl.oeo a side.
Previous to the race the liveliness ef the
pools was extraordinary ,and as fast as the
auctioneer could dispose of the tickets
Lewis and Gibson Bold at $Q even up,
with Lewis aa first choice. So wonderful
ly confident were the Oregon man' sup
porters that the odds finally went to their
favorite, and a brisk business was done at
150 on Lewis to $46 on Gibson. When
heavier betters had been satisfied pools
still sold merrily at 820 on Lewis to fit ou
Gibson, and these were the ruling figures
when the men were called out. Toe track
was sandy, heavy and uneven, and the
finish was on an unfavorable incline. while
the wind wss strong against the runners.
At 4: 1 a o'clock Lewis appeared, and was
soon attar followed by Gibson, As soon
as the men strippel for the race It was
evident that the race was Gibson's
(tarring accident. After ten minutes
practice scoring Gibson had the full
measure of his man, and gtdng even with
him over the mark a splendid race for
eighty yards ensued. In the first fiftv
vards Lewis showed remarkable speed.
and the veteran ran rather wild In his ef
fort to hold him. At eighty yards, how
ever, the superior stride and flue condition
of Gibson told, and com tug up with a rush

mark and won in fine style by two yards,

On Thursday noon of last week the
febedd Band, Prof Sibet, leader, came to
Albany and remained till Friday noou.
It was a picnic affair and a meat enjoyable
one to them as well as those who were
eatertained by their playing. On the
evening ef that day the new Mechanics
Band and the Albany City Band, of this
city, all appeared on onr streets discours
ing some very fine music, which was en
thusiast icly received by the large crowds
who turned out to bear it. It is not the
Democrat's place to compare the playing
of the Bands; the public, though, freely
did this. If we ware asked to give the
majority's vote it would not be a difficult
thing to do. Beginning at nine o'clock a
ball was given at Crawford's Hall in hon
or of the Shedd Band. An attendance of
about forty coo pie and excellent music by
Richard's orchestra insured the good time
which was had.

Twenty -seven specimens of handwriting
by the puplis of the school taught by Mr S A
DeVaney, near Lebanon, have been present
ed the Democrat office, with a reqnest, for
a decision as to the four cases of greatest
improvement. The improvement in every
case has been so great as to make the task
presented this office a difficult one. Mr De
Vaney has great reason te feel proud of his
disciples of Spencerian. Nos. 7, 11, 12 and
14 were the numbers selected, not because
they indicate a better hand now, bnt because
their scribbling at the beginning of the term
was the poorest in the judgment of this of.

Anniversary Services.
On next Sunday morning at the Baptist
Church the first anniversary services of the
pastorate of Rey Brownson will be held, and
in the evening the anniversary of the Sab
bath School will be celebrated by appropri
ate exercises by the scholars of the school.
This church since its reorganizationjhas taken
rapid strides and is now on a good footing.
Its pastor has justly become quite popular,
and it is but fitting the first anniversary of
his pastorate should be commemorated in a
proper manner.

The public quarterly examination for
teachers wiil be held at the Court House
in Albany .commencing at neon on Thurs
day, March 26th end continue two days,
and all those desiring certificates are

The Mechanis's Band has been improved
by the acquisition to it of Mr Thos Monteith,

out of the river on the guard of the boat, as
if to get s better view of the launch. Hap
