BACK In 1)10 I was running a general trading; business at Siirrr Lake, in South OntraJ Orfcon. Wrll, the bojra oard to corns In now and then with an automobile they wanted to get rid of. I would trade tli-m for It. Never mind what 1 traded. IWore a great while I was dolns a lot of buatneaa trading la second-hand cars. And that was my Introduction to tha automobile bualneaa. Presently SUrer Lake cot too small for me and 1 came to Portland. I went to work for Howard M. Covey as a saleeman. letter I became saleaman for Hentamln K. Boon selling; Ford rare. I did pretty well at It- In lli K. A. Mttrhell and I became partners In the Oakland agrenry here. We did a fine bualnass. Then, keeping my partner ship with Mr. Mitchell in Lbs other line. I took a Ford asenry. When I started that agency I em ployed three men In the ahirp and one In the office. In one year and six months I had built It op from a four man to a 4-mn proposition. I-n.t Sep tember I moved into quarters at Sixth and Madison streets with the blctrest Ford abency on the Pacific CobhU our contract calllna; for 650 cars a year. In the meantime Mr. Mitchell, ray partner, bad taken on the Liberty and l'remier, two of the very finest cars In America. Last month I sold out my Ford aaency and bouarht out Mr. Mitch ell's Interest in these cars. I did it bfcaiixe I believe most thoroughly In the Liberty and the Premier. They are cars that a man can back with all the enthusiasm In the world, and I am eo Inc to put them over "bis" In this ter ritory. Incidentally. I also handle the Hood tractor, which has given fine satisfac tion in many lumber camps where It is belna used. CARE I.V SEPARATING PARTS Too Grrat I'orcc l"cdMay Cansc Parts to Spring. When separating sections of gear box or crank cases It will sometimes be found that the parts stick together after the holts have been removed, fare should he taken In separating: them, especially If the parts are of aluminum. lrivlng a chisel or screw driver between the two sections may make a nick, which will spoil their oll-tlghtnes... or may raine a burr, which will prevent the partis from com Injr together properly. Tbe application of too great force may cau.-e the parta to spring;. Gently prying st a number of places, after the stuck parts have been tapped all around with a llsht hammer, will us ually aeparate Uiem without damage. TIRE PCTTV FOR TREAD CCTS Quirk Repairing Necessary to Keep Out Water and Gravel. Small cuts In tha tread and the side walls should be promptly repaired with tire putty by the truck driver, to pre vent gravel and water from entering which would cause enlargement of the cut and eventual separation of the tread from the carcass. The most dan gerous tread cuts are -those between the diamond-shaped blocks of rubber.
