If tha low gear la In mesh the en gine will revolve four tlmea for every turn of the drive shaft, making 1 revolutions of the engine to one of the rear wheels. If hkeh gear were need, the engine would turn over only fatr times. By using the low gear we gat four times the braking effect. If we have a four-cylinder engtae we have two times the braking effect. If we have a four-cylinder engine we have two atrokea of the pistons for each revolution, making S3 atrokea of the piston to each revolution of the rear wheels. Testa ahenld Be Made. The question arises as to whether auction or compression la nsed. Most people say compression, as they know how difficult It la to crank aa engine ver compression. But It la not diffi cult to apln an engine once It la ' started, as tba release of compression helps the fly wheel along. Jf In doubt, try aptnnlng an engine by hand, with the compression cocks open, and again with them closed. It WIN be found much harder If corka are closed. The condition of suction above tha pistons Is opposed by atmospheric prea sure below the pistons, making a heavy resistance. This Is not only reason able, but it may be readily tested oat In practice. To try It out on a car. choose a mod erately steep hill and go down n low gear, clutch In and Ignition off. It la possible under certain conditions to keep a car that usea battery tcnl- tion running without the use of the battery. Thlo is when the battery sys tem employs a generator to feed a load after a certain engine speed has been reached, while the battery is called upon for speeds of less than 13 miles or so. If the battery Is out of commission It Is tmoosslble to get the car started In the ordinary way. but If the vehicle ta towed or otherwise got in motion. It ran be kept going. The usual procedure la to use the foot brake for a while and then to change to the emergency brake. Thla relieves the brake linings, but does not cool the drums, aa the two brakes. Internal and external, use the same drum. So by using the engine aad geara the brakes are relieved of much duty. The engine la cooled by thla process, aa cold gasoline vapor la drawn Into the engine from the car buretor. Thla Is a decided advantage, as the gasoline spray softens the car boa on cylinder walla and pistons, and ao enables It to burn away more readily wbca the engine atarta firing. Wl.rirtaa May Resale. If thla Is continued too long, how ever, another effect Is produced which la ant so desirable. All the time the engine Is being driven this way oil Is being siphoned to the top of the pis ten, due to the unusually strong suc tion while throttled down. This ef fect Is the more pronounced If the pis ton rinaa art faulty or the cylinders are worn out of round. While the en gine la working normally the oil Is pushed down by the force of the ex plosion, and so does not accumulate ia the cylinder head. But when the en gine ta used as a brake the tendency toward misfiring due to oil la increased. Using the engine as a brake does i at m.rely concern the sating of the brakes, but may be of vttal Importance la case the brakea falL Thla la a rare eccurrence. to be sure, but the history f motoring shows many fatalities from thla cause, ttefore negotiating a steep decline It Is best to mesh the gears before the necessity arises. Broadway ITT. if you could build your track you would want a motor, of special design, built for truck purposes, such that it could work hour after hour, with abso lute dependability just as the Kissel does. you would want a motor so designed and perfected that it could burn the low-grade fuels, that had the valve openings large enough to burn distillate and other cheaper fuels without any resultant engine trouble just as the Kissel does. you would want a motor so designed that even under heavy work it would be free from vibration, whose crankshaft was amply supported, and had extra large bearings, three in num ber just as the Kissel truck has. you would want a positively driven oiling system that would eliminate lubricating troubles and consequent costly repairs just as the Kissel Truck has. you would build a frame for that motor larger than most peo ple seem to think necessary, such that it could stand all the wear and tear on the job that you have in mind just as Kissel has done. 'you would see that the drop forgings and the steering knuckles were all of the best that is to be had, even if it cost a lot more than is ordinarily considered good enough, you would want the worm gear drive for heavy duty because of its freedom from trouble and greater power efficiency.
