David Yandell said m edia reports put the Jan. 21 q u ak e's death toll at 28 people with 10,000 residents left hom eless, but the people he talked to at shelters and in C olim a neighbor hoods, estim ated that 60 to 70 people died, with more people missing. Y andell said he saw hundreds o f adobe houses com pletely dem ol ished, and saw churches with huge structural cracks. Y andell is a R adio C ab driver from Portland w ho frequently comes to the aid o f P ortland’s disadvan taged. Each year he helps hundreds o f local residents during cam paigns to donate turkeys to the needy for the holidays. He also collects and delivers school supplies and bi cycles for deserving kids. D uring his visit to M exico, he helped quake victim s carry bricks aw ay from dem olished hom es and bought sodas for victim s.
