Rob Scheps Big Band returns

A local p hotographer recently
brought hom e pictures and stories
from C olim a, M exico after visiting
the city to o ffer help to residents
dealing w ith the afterm ath o f a 7.8
m agnitude quake.
David Yandell said m edia reports
put the Jan. 21 q u ak e's death toll at
28 people with 10,000 residents left
hom eless, but the people he talked to
at shelters and in C olim a neighbor
hoods, estim ated that 60 to 70 people
died, with more people missing.
Y andell said he saw hundreds o f
adobe houses com pletely dem ol
ished, and saw churches with huge
structural cracks.
Y andell is a R adio C ab driver
from Portland w ho frequently comes
to the aid o f P ortland’s disadvan
taged. Each year he helps hundreds
o f local residents during cam paigns
to donate turkeys to the needy for
the holidays. He also collects and
delivers school supplies and bi
cycles for deserving kids.

bought sodas for victim s.

ton o f am bition, tw o teachers and 24 students set forth to execute the
first theater production attem pted at M anuel D om inguez High School
in m ore than 20 years and to dem onstrate that th ere’s m ore to their
school than riots and basketball. D irected by Scott H am ilton K ennedy,
‘O ur T o w n ' closely follow s these students through their em pow ering
and conflict ridden rehearsals and into their hom es and hearts. T he
