The Soul O f An Addict The street life expkxtes on the night scene; and a young brother tries to catch the impossible dream, Cadillac cars, Movie stars and Ho’s with lady like looks, a blind man, a liquor stand and a trick gets took.... Gangsters, players and real pimpish pimps; elaborate cocktails, manicured nails and girls with swaying hips fonn the womb to the tomb is all you knew: because the street ofbroken Dreams is where you grew. And suddenly Boo-Yaaa! and a crack puff: and one more hit just isn’t enough! but you were all o f that plus a bag ofchips; hip slick and cool, and the dope thing that made you move, stuck like chuck down on your luck and not even a friend: :laying in a Dope house, a jail house at your wits end. Shot-up, Smoked-up and suck ing on some bad wine, came close in Death more than just a few times. Kennedy school's unsung hero Continued from Front Metro The McMenamin bid won out over 12 other proposals, in part because the task force trusted the brothers to carry through. At a public meeting attended by 130 people, it received overwhelming support However, there was an obstacle: The property's residential zoning. Harrison and his staff proposed a zone change as part o f a larger re zoning package that, among other things, called for higher density infill development in the area. There was strong community opposition to this and Harrison withdrew it, leaving an isolated “spot” rezoning for the Kennedy property in violation of the bureau’s own policies. The Portland Planning Com m is sion rejected the proposal. Shortly thereafter. City Council, prodded by neighborhood phone calls, asked p them to reconsider. Taking the hint, most o f the commission went along. Looking at the finished result of the process, Fossum told the gath ering, “ If the neighborhood, the gov ernment and the private sector all get together and draw boundaries around what they want to see, this is what you can accom plish.” As for Darby, she told the O b server the next day, “ I can ’t stop smiling I’m delighted.” Finding the perfect pumpkin is part o f the fun o f halloween for Khadijah Harden and her mom I'eisha Parker. In 1995, 58.1% o f A m erican overall received their influenza shots, but only 39.3% o f A frican- Americans reported receiving their flu shots. And w hile 35.6% o f all seniors age 65 and over reported receiving their pneumococcal shots in 1995, only 19.7% o f senior A f rican-A m ericans received the vac cine, the CDC said recently. Failure to get flu and pneumonia shots puts seniors at unnecessary risk for complicationsof illness that lead to as many as 60,000 deaths every year. “ W e’ve seen a slight increase in v a c c in a tio n s a m o n g A f r ic a n - E x h a le ", se v e ra l g ro u p s from C a lifo rn ia and New Y ork c o m b in ed to d isc u ss and d e v e lo p stra te g ie s to rem edy the lack o f m ean in g fu l ro le s for black a c tresses.
