Art is Alive features perform ers from O regon Ballet T heatre, the Portland O pera Association, the O regon Sym phony, and Portland Repertory T he atre in 40-m inute audience-partici patory program s at A nkeny Plaza stage in W aterfront Park directly across from Portland Saturday Market. April 9, the Stradivarius Strings o f the Oregon Sym phony performs “The Many M oods o f M usic” at 12 and 2 p.m. V iolinists Hugh Ew art and Tristan Lehnert, violist Ron W illiams, and cellist Tim othy Scott have been featured perform ers at Portland area events for 17 years. At 1 and 3 pm, the Portland Repertory Theatre will p er form sketches from the aw ard-w in ning com edy “U p ’n ’U nder” by John Godber. Program s for Saturday, A pril 16 Soul Sistahs Visit United States E-T-E-R-N -A -L!!!!!! Seven let ters and a sizzling top 20 R& B/Pop jam entitled, “ Stay” from their debut album Always & Forever on EM I/ ERG is scheduled to visit the United States. This dope UK band will experi ence the US flava as they launch their press and prom otional tour in M arch. Eternal will make their US television debut on M T V ’s Spring Break on M arch 14th. Also, scheduled is B E T ’s V ideo L P and a host o f other national TV appearances. These soul sistahs will shoot the video for their second single, “Just A Step Form H eaven” directed by famed director Matthew Rolston. This hip and funky director transform ed “W hatta M an,” by the funky divas Salt-n-Pcpa & En Vogue into one o f the m ost sensational video o f the year. feature the artists o f the Portland O pera at 12 and 2 pm perform ing “A rt is Calling For Me: An A fternoon o f Broadway and light opera”. The O regon Ballet Theatre presents “ Bal let to Basketball” program at 1 and 3 pm. This program was rated one of the top ten in the country by Young Audiences o f America. Saturday, A pril 16, A rt is alive features mural artist Larry Kangas O regon S ymphony J A M E S securing the nationally recognized talent for the first ever Rose Festival - sanctioned event on the W ashington side o f the river. The gates will open Friday, June 17, at 4:30 p.m . A dm isión to the outdoor concert wi 11 be $ 15. The open ing acts will be the only paid perfor m ances o f the three day festival. Alvin and the C hipm unks with the Straw berry Jam Band will perform 2 p.m., Saturday. T he project is a joint effort with O ld Tow n/C hinatow n and the Historic Old Tow n Association. Art is Alive visitors may enter a drawing to win dinner at D elfm a’s and a pair o f tickets to the ballet, the opera, the theatre and the symphony, as well as Portland Saturday Market gift certificates and other items. Port land Saturday Market customers will receive a set of Portland Saturday Market notecards free with purchases of S20 or more on both Saturdays. Portland Saturday M arket is the country’s largest open air market in continuous operation, with nearly 300 booth spaces and over 500 active ven dors. It opened in Old Tow n in June 1974. Vendors must make and sell their own products and are accepted into the market based on the handcraftedness and quality of their products. The boundaries of Portland Sat urday M arket are Front Avenue and First Street, from under the Burnside Bridge to the Fire Station, however the m arket’s crowds attract other ven dors to the area. Booths outside the market boundaries do not m eet m ar ket qualifications and are unaffiliated with Portland Saturday Market.
