The lives o f the Haitian refugees just don’ t matter. They are black, mostly poor, and they come from a country with no o il, natural resources or strategic value. The only “ assets'' these Haitians have to o l lei is a hunger for freedom and an enormous measure o f courage. I t ’ s sad dial the President o f the United Slates places so little value on these classically American charac teristics. M r. Bush’ s policy regarding the Haitian refugees is based upon a foundation o f crystal-clear racism. His executive order is one o f the most • Portland, areas $18.00 and up • Group rates available • We pick you up at your home • We check your flight on return • American Express & Optima Accepted “ Advance Reservations Required" ’ , . e * *» . •* '• i ' z -. includes land or not ) W<' won't Seattle: 461-3000 or 1-800-562-3563 obscene and inhuman decisions made by an American President in recent memory. Recently, Katherine Dunham, the world renowned dancer and choreog rapher, ended a long hunger strike in support o f the H a itia n refugees. Dunham, w ell into her 80’ s and in tailing health, was asked why she would risk lierow n life for thiscause. She said that she wanted to make the world understand the struggle o f some the bravest people she had ever met. She went on to criticize the President for tailing to protect those who were strug gling for democracy in our own “ hack yard.” The courage, humanity and d ig nity o f the Haitian refugees is clear. What remains to be seen is whether or not the President o f the United States w ill overcome his “ color problem” and see these people for who they really arc. Their struggle is our struggle. I urge Mr. Bush to search his conscience. I f he docs, he w ill come to the conclu sion that these people deserve our sup port and safe haven. The Haitian refu gees deserve the same chance for free dom that has been extended to other oppressed people. Instead, the Presi dent is sending them back to certain peril. 4
