B ELL C arl Parker and his w ife ’ Andrea are b u ild in g a fa c ility called the C o m m u n ity L e arning Center. It is the out grow th o f a program that orig in a te d in 1985 whose acronym was C .I.T .Y . citizens in vo lve d in teaching. The p ro gram addressed the needs o f children kindergarten through sixth grades and focus in on reading and math s kills. •f . 4 . » ‘ » .'C s , S a .- a - From 1985 - 1992 the c ity p ro gram has served 600 students and p ro vided over 40,000 hours o f tu to rin g •/•.•tr- ■»; ? . . Parker said that parents have express to him concern about the p u b lic educa rr * tio n system, and some have encour aged him and his w ife to consider an alternative education program . In September 1991 they began a private elem entary school, en ro llm e n t reached high as 16 students and ended 1 •r X » the school year w ith 13. Parker w ho holds a P .H .D . from Oregon State U n iv e rs ity , and is em ployed by Portland C o m m u n ity C o l lege as a vocational C ounselor and his w ife also an educator have long held a vision o f a learning center. Th is spring it started to m aterialize. Am erican State Bank has provided interim fin a n cing w h ile the learning center is under construction. High School Winners A lth o u g h o rig in a lly envisioned as an award fo r high school Seniors, The Portland Opera Perform ing A rts Schol arship program was expanded to include ten $100 awards to local m iddle school students through the generosity o f M r. D a vid N ero, C EO o f D a vid N ero & Associates. W inners were selected by the in d ivid u a l school staffs based on students’ interests and dedication. M r.
