Hon. Geo. C. Brownell was then called for and made a brief speech in which be announced that be should not be a can didate before the congressional conven tion and thanking his friends for their preferred supiiort he should step down into the ranks and work like any true republican should work for the success of the whole ticket in June. A Important Civii, Cask Monday was the scene of a large gathering in town coming from every point of the com pass to listen to the civil action brought by William Miller vs. Murray and McConnell. The attorneys for tlie prosecution were Messrs. Dye and Hurst, and for the defense were Camp bell and Marks. The case was handled very creditably by both prosecution and defense. The point at issue was a suit brought to recover money from Murray on a verbal contract purporting to be as follows: Mr. Miller, the prosecutor in this action, originally held a promissory note and chattel mortgage on the hop crop of one WingC'hing, (Chinaman) and it appear, that the Chinaman in order to obtain picking money seemed the tame from Mm ray by agreeing to consign his hops through him, thereafter it was dis covered by Mr. Murray that this mort gage was in existence, hence went to Mr. Miller and agreed verbally to assume the amount of this indebtedness against Wing Ching with a proviso that the chattel mortgage be cancelled. So in the evidence brought out Monday, Mr. Murray does not deny other than stating that in making this propsition, that be made the proviso that nut less than seven cents should be received for the hops which amount, however, was not real ized ; hence the action. Several cita tions of the law were referred to, where in supreme judges bad decided that nothing would be in evidence unless an endorsement was made by writing on the instrument. The jury was out nine hours and brought in a verdict allowing the prosecution Ml and costs.. Rept'BLiCAN Pbimakv. More than usual interest wan taken in the primary held in Columbia hall last Saturday, as was demonstrated by the great number of republican votes. From all appear ances there seemed to be quite a num ber aspiring to be delegates to the county convention, as nine names were pro posed, three of which could only be elected. The result was an election of Messrs Andy Kocher, C. F. Ziegler.and C. U. Barlow. The delegates go to the convention unpledged, but to do the best they can in assisting in putting op a good strong ticket. Everything was harmnnv and notwithstanding a few were disappointed, all were well satis fied. A New Business. Mr, Ed. Kirktiam was in town Monday and succeeded in making arrangements for the opening of a barber shop, and in consequence will open up a shop in the Bourctte building at the southeast corner of First and Main St., about the first of next week.
