Registration will begin at noon at the B .P .O . E. hall where lunch will be served. Dinner will be served at 6p.m. at the VFW hall. All Emblem club members and all husbands are Invited to attend the dinner and the dancing following. *********** RETURN FROM TRIP Flossie and A1 Buchanan re turned this week from a trip to Tonopah, Nevada. TROPHY DEER is this one put down by Tony Felipe, while hunting with Jim Archibald n e a r Cape Ferrelo this week. The big four point buck weighed in at 159 pounds, two pounds heavier than the "record” claimed last week by Brother Colegrove in the same area. Checking over the buck here is "Scottie" Archibald, nephew of Felipe. The Brookings City Council made another r o u n d on the p o ss ibility of "Just getting a start ” on the street paving program for Brookings next summer. The discussion was parclplta- ted by the Planning Commission recommendation that the city initiate street surfacing, at the cost to the property owners of 30$ a front foot. It was recom mended that the city crew do the work, and the 30$ figure would pay for the m aterials. The planning com m ission also recommended that it be done as much as possible on a volunteer basis. The project would Include a heavy oil surface, which would not be permanent, but would bibid down dust, and would be a base for future work. It was discussed that it would be the only plan within the finan cial reach of the people at thia tim e. It was the general opinion o f the council that "we've got to make a start". Thereactlon of the council wan that there would be difficulties making the paving on a volunteej b asis, and said that it probably would have to be done on a sp ec ial assessm ent district b asis. The planning com m issions idea was to get the people interested down to sign up, so that it could be determined who wants partt«. There was also the question of which streets are ready for the work. In conclusion the council nam - ed a com m ittee, consisting of three councIlmen, and two plan ning com m ission members to work with Bill Spencer to try to determine what streets would be worked on. R O A D TO The Brookings-Harbor Cham ber of Commerce board of d ir ectors will hold a special session this Thursday night to discuss the p ossib ilities of a road to Grants P ass through Oregon. Marshall Dana, form er editor lal writer of the Oregonian, and now assistant to the president of the U.S. National Bank has been invited to present his views on the subject. Erichsen, of Coos B a y , a consulting engineer, who said that he would like to be retained by the city to do their engineer ing work. Erichsen is already consulting engineer for Myrtle Point, Gold Beach, Reedsport, Eastside and Bandon. * He explained his fees, and his staff, and what his experiences were. The council agreed to consld er the matter. Again the matter of the 8 or 1C homes which, according to Fire Chief Val Mendenhall, have bad fireplaces, came up for discus» ion. It was reported that the insur snee companies were accepting the work. It was agreed to give them another look by a party of three before taking any further action. There was some talk on the Sewer Treatment Plant bond la aw and how many m ills it would coat the taxpayers. Erichsen said that the e l t y would have to bond for the full amount of work to bo done, which would be around >140,000, and thennotissue the warranto nets* complete amount if the federal government will go along for third of the cost as antic jpated. Nothing oould bo dona on the bond issue until a more oompleto cost study picture is obtained. The Library committee rapert- ed plana for the landscaping a r e com plete, but they need funds to start on the project. About 40 people were present for the occasion, and a monetary gift was presented to Father Brown by those attending. ************____________ Forest lamia.
