Brookings-Harbor FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH By Clifford Rowe I have always w ondered why anyone should ever have been taken in by that old say mg “Early to bed and early to rise m akes a man healthy, w ealthy and wise". As far as 1 am personaliy con cerned, I have alw ays ^<-en a trifle dubious as to th e genuine sincerity of the author, whoever he was. 1 have alw ays had a sneaking hunch that he was laugh mg up his sleeve all th e tim e; for it seems to me that all the people J know' who are healthy, w ealthy and wise have burned plenty of m idnight oil in their time. And then, of course, there was th e oth* r one which advocated early 1t mi’, “The e .o !. Im d catches the w orm ’’--w h ic h seem: to encourage dow nright discrim i nation between birds and worms. Now it had always been my be lief th a t in the scheme of things, birds and worms were created equal and th a t n eith er w'as en titled to any preference over the other. But still, according to thi.-» proverb, getting up early will be OK for the bird, but the worm would have been b etter of to have stayed snug in bed. But I guess the one th a t really gives me most concern or at leas causes me to have th e guiltiest feelings is th at which insists th a t one "hould “ never put off until tom orrow th a t w’hich can be done today" Somehow, although 1 given th idea a fair break on several occasions, I still fail to see w herein one derives any p r titu la r benefit.
