Lori Johnson Memorial Learning Garden completed at Portland office The long-planned “Planting Day and Potluck’’ finally arrived on June 2. It seems like only yesterday, Lori Johnson stood and gazed out at the courtyard gar den and said, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we could replant it with all Native Oregon plants that were used by our ancestors?” Since that day, many people have come together to see Johnson’s vision Hilfilled and the Portland Area Office would like to thank them: • • • • • • • • Siletz Tribal Council Brenda Bremner, Tribal General Manager The family of Lori Johnson Portland Area Office staff Healthy Traditions Steering Committee Siletz Tribal Elders and community members Michael Phillips, Siletz Tribal Busi ness Corporation Special acknowledgement to the Port land Area Office beading group and staff for making 45 honor necklaces to gift to Judy Bluehorse-Skelton, PSU students and volunteers who planted the garden. In addition, a special thanks to our community partners: • • East Multnomah Soil & Water Con servation District, which awarded us a SPACE grant to fund this project Judy Bluehorse-Skelton and Portland State University Capstone students for months of collaboration, planning, donating plants and planting the garden We allowed the garden time to recover from transplanting and officially will open it to visitors on July 6 in conjunction with our Health Fair. We invite all who can attend this event to learn about the plants in the garden and how they were used for food and medicine, to remember Lori Johnson and to remember the fact that if we vision it, together we can make it come true. f I I I I I I I I I Mark your calendar for annual Culture Camp July 12-14,2011 • Siletz, Oregon Culture Camp will be held at the Tribal Community Center on Government Hill in Siletz. Camp is for Tribal members and Tribal families only. Children under age 10 must be chaperoned by an adult. The Camp Planning Committee is looking for volunteers to teach classes of cultural traditional nature and arts. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Bev Youngman at 541-444-8290 or 800-922-1399, ext. 1290; or e-mail bevy@ctsi.nsn.us. Applications are available at all area offices, the Tribal administration building and the Tribal Community Center.
