Tribe helps Siletz Valley Fire District obtain new AEDs and other equipment By Natasha Kavanaugh The Siletz Tribal Charitable Contri bution Fund recently awarded the Siletz Valley Fire District a grant to purchase two automatic external defibrillators (AEDs). In early June, the fire district took possession of these devices and they were placed in service. One is on Logsden fire engine 5302 and the other is on Siletz rescue truck 5231. This lifesaving equipment allows for better coverage of the fire district and allows them to be more readily available when responding and saving lives. “The Siletz Valley Fire District is extremely grateful to the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Foundation and while we are thankful for this equipment, we hope we never have to use it,” said Dave Lapof, chief of the Siletz Valley Fire District. “We want to remind everyone that AEDs are only part of the chain of survival. Bystander CPR is essential to saving someone’s life.” To learn more about CPR classes, contact your local fire department. New Zoll Auto Pulse equipment Dean Sawyer, Tribal emergency management planner, recently acquired replacement bands for the Zoll Auto Pulse owned by the Siletz Valley Fire District. This device is an automatic CPR-type machine. Once a patient is placed on the device, the bands are applied around the patient’s chest and the battery-operated machine (Auto Pulse) begins compres sions according to current American Heart Association guidelines. This equipment will help maximize staffing during a medical emergency by allowing the all-volunteer district to do more with fewer people, as it is frequently short-staffed. “The bands are extremely expensive and would otherwise use valuable dollars to keep in stock,” said Lapof. “We are grateful to Dean Sawyer and the State Pub lic Health Emergency Preparedness grant for this critical and costly equipment.” Courtesy photo from Dean Sawyer Dave Lapof, Dean Sawyer and firefighter Kaitlin Kevek hold the replacement bands for the Zoll Auto Pulse equipment. The Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund, Sawyer and a State Public Health Emergency Preparedness grant helped the fire district obtain these critical supplies.
