State Board Increases Oregon’s High School Graduation Requirements SALEM, Ore. - The State Board of Education voted Jan. 18 to increase Oregon's graduation requirements to better prepare students for college and the workforce. Students will be required to take more rigorous coursework and higher levels of math and science in order to receive a diploma. The change was approved in a unanimous vote. The State Board approved: Requiring three credits of math, with algebra I the minimum level for which credits may be earned. This would take effect for the class of 2014. Requiring three credits of science, up from two, with two of them laboratory-based courses, to take effect with the class of 2012. Requiring three credits from among arts, second language, and profes sional technical education, starting with the class of 2012. Ensuring that all students have the opportunity to earn credit by dem- • • • • • onstrating proficiency, based on content standards, in lieu of traditional “seat time” in a class. The board wants to give districts flexibility to meet students’ needs in different ways. Requiring students to demonstrate a set of “essential skills.” They’ll include reading and interpreting a variety of texts, writing for a vari ety of purposes, speaking and pre senting publicly, applying math ematics in a variety of settings, demonstrating civic and commu nity engagement, and thinking critically and analytically. The State Board will continue to work on a plan to implement the new’ requirements, including teacher prepa ration and support to elementary and middle school students so they can en ter high school prepared to meet the new requirements. Some provisions of the new diploma will require new ad ministrative rules or action by the Or egon Legislature. Il brings established, mid-career, and/or emerging playwrights to the Autry National Center in Los Angeles to workshop material with professional directors, dramaturges, and actors. Through workshops and staged readings, an annual festival of new plays, a vibrant and growing Young Native Voices: Theater Education Project, an annual Playwrights Retreat, new play commissions, and Equity productions. Native Voices at the Autry supports American Indian playwrights and their individual creative processes, often from original idea to production. In addition to serving Native writers. Native Voices creates opportunities for Native actors, directors, and key theatre artists to practice and advance their craft. All emerging or experienced play wrights writing from the indigenous experience in North America are encour- ged to submit their work for consideration. To he considered for production in 200X Native Voices at the Autry Equity Production, please submit scripts by March 15, 2007. Up to five playwrights will be in vited to work on their plays with pro fessional actors, directors, and dramaturges during a weeklong work shop at the Autry National Center. Each play will receive a staged reading at the Autry's 215-seat Wells Fargo Theater. Submissions should be received by April 15, 2007, for the 2007 Native Voices at the Autry Play Festival. Selected playwrights receive an honorarium, round-trip airfare to Los Angeles, plus room and board. Selected playwrights will be notified by Aug. 15, 2007. Native Voices at the Autry only ac cepts full-length plays. Solo perfor mance artists whose work is text-based should send full text in manuscript form. Please do not send one-acts. 10-minute plays, or outlines. Only completed full- length plays, plays for young audiences, or one-person shows will be accepted. All submissions must include a bio. resume, tribal affiliation, and full con tact information, including an e-mail address (if you have one, or if appli cable) to be considered complete.
